Week 1: Hippogriff
Title: Alive
Rating: G
Warnings: None
Word Count: 300 words
Challenge: Ficlet #16
When Draco wakes up, it feels like a hundred Hippogriffs are stomping on his brain. Moving just makes it worse, so he groans and clutches his head, curling up on the floor.
Wait. Why's he on the floor?
"Don't sit up yet." The voice is pitched low, and a firm hand stays his shoulder. "Your head is still bleeding."
It's Potter. His tone is tense in the way it only gets when they're in deep shit. What's happened now?
"Did you forget to switch off the stove in the break room again?" Draco manages. "You know Kingsley's going to have your arse for that."
"Did you lose your memory? Because that is not a good sign."
Draco's throbbing head protests as he forces it to rewind through the day. The sudden call to the Auror Office. The way only him and Potter were available for duty. The wild chase through the Muggle warehouses, covering his partner's back -- and the sharp blow to the head, hard enough to make him black out.
"I think I'm all caught up now," Draco croaks.
"They took our wands," Potter says abruptly. "Your head is still bleeding."
"You've said that already." Draco touches the back of his head gingerly.
"I've got nothing to stop the bleeding."
Draco takes a closer look at Potter. His face is pale and his lips are tight in an unhappy frown. He looks like he's going to break apart from tension. It's a feeling Draco is familiar with, having spent many a night at St Mungo's watching over the unmoving figure of his partner.
"Potter." Draco reaches to touch Potter's arm, ignoring the spots that dance across his vision. "It's all right. I'm alive."
Potter's fingers grasp his, almost desperately. His voice is hoarse when he replies.
"You'd better be."
Week 2: Pygmy Puff
Title: Pecan Puffs
Rating: G
Warnings: None
Word Count: 350 words
Challenge: Ficlet #86
Harry was opening his mouth when it happened.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you."
Harry turned to regard his Auror partner. "What wouldn't you do if you were me?"
"Lots of things," Draco said airily. "Allowing myself in public with a Fwooper's nest on my head is one. Cavorting with redheads with freckles and poor jokes is another."
Harry waited patiently for Draco to get to his point. In the meantime, his pecan puff needed attention.
"Don't do it!" Draco shrieked, taking out Harry's left eardrum.
"What are you on about?"
"I know you weren't listening during the Beast division's presentation last week, but even you should have heard about the Pecan Puffs." Draco paused dramatically. "The Pecan Puff is cousin to the Pygmy Puff. Which have now been pronounced endangered, so I don't think anyone would take kindly to you eating that, no matter how hungry you are."
Harry stared. "You're pulling my leg. Next you'll be saying cream puffs are related to pecan puffs and I can't eat them either."
Draco ignored him. "Who sent those to you?"
"Ginny, but -- "
"Aha! Ginny Weasley, who just happens to be related to the original breeders of the Pygmy Puff."
"I would have heard if George were breeding a new species -- "
"But would you really?" Draco steepled his fingers thoughtfully. "If he were creating something to use against his sister's ex-husband?"
"Ginny and I parted amicably!"
"Then go ahead. Don't run to me when the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures has your head for consuming endangered creatures."
Harry scowled and brought the puff to his lips.
A terrible squeal sounded. Harry dropped the puff in horror. It gasped and wiggled towards Draco's side of the table, where it was promptly scooped up and popped into an eager mouth.
"Draco!" Harry cried. "That's a Pecan Puff!"
"And a very delicious one it is, too." Draco pocketed his wand. "Olling's makes the best pastries." A beat. "Don't tell me you actually believed my story."
Harry growled and lunged at his partner.
Week 4: Phoenix
Title: From the Ashes
Rating: G
Warnings: None
Word Count: 137 words
Challenge: Ficlet #29
Harry is beautiful.
He's always known that, of course. Known it and never admitted it to himself, not even when Harry was reaching down to him from his broom, a sooty hand against a backdrop of flames.
Now, as Harry makes his way through the throng of rebuilders at Hogwarts, smiling at the claps on his back and the warm greetings, Draco pauses in his wandwork and quietly drinks in the sight of him.
He doesn't realize Finnegan is yelling until he finally looks up to see a large rock crashing down towards him. Frozen in fear, Draco can only stare.
Someone runs at him and knocks him to the side.
"All right there, Malfoy?" Harry's face is pale. He reaches a hand down to Draco.
Draco grasps it and feels like he's coming back to life.
Week 5: Jarvey
Title: Rude, Obnoxious and Ferrety
Rating: PG
Warnings: None
Word Count: 224
Challenge: Ficlet #87
"Have you heard?" Ron said conversationally, scooping a generous helping of mash onto his plate. "Someone shot a curse at Malfoy in the hallway yesterday."
Harry felt his heart stop, then start again in an anxious flurry. "What? What curse?"
"Turned him into a Jarvey." Ron sniggered. "Not much difference, if you ask me. Still rude, obnoxious and ferrety."
Harry waited until Ron's mouth was full before mumbling an excuse and fleeing the breakfast table.
When Harry arrived at the infirmary, disheveled and panting slightly, Pansy and Blaise were on their way out. Pansy took one look at him and snorted. "Good luck handling that one." They left.
Harry moved in to see a miserable huddle of white fur curled in the bed. His heart clenched in sympathy. "Hey Draco."
A furry head lifted and slate grey eyes stared directly at him. "So it's Potty. Came to laugh at me too?" I'm scared."Figures you would have nothing better to do." Thanks for coming.
Harry shifted awkwardly. "I was worried when you didn't show last night."
"Bloody insecure git you are." But then Draco clapped a paw over his mouth, and seemed to hunch even more into himself.
Harry took pity on him and dragged a chair to the bed. "I'll keep you company."
"Don't hurt yourself." I'm glad you're here.
Week 6: Thestral
Title: Pariah
Rating: G
Warnings: None
Word Count: 175
Challenge: Ficlet #85
They avoid him. Side-stepping past him in the corridor, eyes sliding over him like they’d never noticed him -- a pale figure draped in too-black robes, clutching his book bag and his fears tightly to himself, trying not to stick out and yet wanting to be seen, to be validated.
Someone bumps into Draco roughly. His bag drops and its contents scatter. Draco sinks to to the floor; the boy never turns to glance at him. All around, students step over Draco’s belongings, as though kept away by an invisible magical barrier. Draco should be grateful they don’t smash the glass ink bottle his mother gave him, that careless feet don’t rip his Transfigurations essay. He feels helpless instead.
“Malfoy, you dropped this.” Potter picks up the quill, hands it over. Doesn’t flinch when Draco’s bony fingers brush his, trembling from the sensation of human touch.
Potter has seen death. He can see Thestrals, and he isn’t afraid.
He sees Draco.
And Draco, still kneeling as Potter makes his way down the corridor -- Draco wants more.
Week 7 (Semi-Finals): Unicorn
Title: Redemption
Rating: G
Warnings: None
Word Count: 140
Challenge: Ficlet #45
They came upon it in a clearing, gleaming white amidst the dark green foliage, as though it were waiting for them.
Potter went first. The unicorn allowed his approach, until Potter was confidently stroking its mane. He looked at Draco. "Come on, then."
Draco hesitated. "Can't you just -- get the hair on your own?"
"Your wand would be more consistent if you harvested it yourself."
Draco cringed, imagining the darkness and corruption covering his hands as he reached out towards the snow white flank. Muscles shifted as the unicorn breathed in and out, but it stayed warm and steady under Draco's tentative strokes. It did not bolt.
"Only the pure can touch a unicorn." Potter's gaze was heavy on Draco.
"What rot," Draco returned shakily, but he clung to it like a lifeline. Maybe even Death Eaters could be redeemed.
Week 8 (Finals): Dragon
Title: Dragon Rider
Rating: PG
Warnings: None
Word Count: 100
Challenge: Drabble #18
Harry enjoys the challenge of riding dragons. Charlie says they can never be tamed, but there's a savage pride in controlling and mounting them, knowing he's one of few who can make them yield to his touches and turns.
With Draco, it's different. It’s the careful, slow pursuit of someone who’s learned that no one can love him unless he’s smart, beautiful, worthy. Draco is sharp angles and hot tears and bitterness. Harry swallows all of these until his dragon yields, broken and shaking and tender.
His dragon gives his heart to him. Harry holds it in a terrified grip.
