Valentine's Day in the Great Hall, and as the shower of pink confetti and heart-shaped cards fluttered down from the enchanted ceiling, Teddy Lupin couldn't help but feel heavy inside.
Once again he hadn't received a special valentine from anyone. Lots of people liked Teddy, but nobody really liked him enough to be an admirer. Most of the time it didn't bother him, as he had a lot of close friends and was enjoying his time at Hogwarts just learning magic and having fun with everyone. But there was one person he thought of with just a little bit more fondness, and one person who he wished he could have just a little bit more fun with.
Victoire Weasley sat halfway down the table, chattering with her friends as she ate her breakfast. Teddy felt his heart constrict and his stomach flip as he watched her, wondering how she could always look like she had her own little spotlight shining down on her. He waited, wondering, and wishing he could fast forward through this moment, to avoid his impending humiliation.
But time seemed to slow down instead, so that Teddy felt he was swimming in molasses, as he watched the little pink card soar down from the sky to land beside Victoire's plate. She startled slightly, then picked the card up off the table, opening it to read the words which Teddy had spent hours agonizing over the night before. A Very Happy Valentine's Day, To The Friend Who Has Stolen My Heart. Be Mine This Year? From Teddy. It was too simple; it was too sappy; it was too honest. Teddy cringed remembering it, and shrank down in his seat.
What would Victoire do? Laugh and show the card to all of her friends? No, she was far too kind for that. She would smile down the table at him and invite him for a walk by the lake, so that she could let him down easy. Certainly she wouldn't blow a kiss his way and confess she loved him, too. Teddy closed his eyes and took a deep breath, steeling himself before looking again, to catch Victoire's reaction.
It was worse than he would have feared. Victoire tucked the card casually into her bag and continued talking to her friends, as carelessly as though nothing at all had just happened. Teddy felt his heart sink into his stomach and down to the floor, as a swirling dimness entered his vision. There was nothing; he was nothing to her. But he should have expected it.
What did it matter if they'd played hide and seek together as children, laughing as they ran across the grounds of the Burrow? What did it matter if they sometimes met between classes for lunch, to share stories of their professors and classmates? There were plenty of people that they spoke to; they each had plenty of friends. Victoire probably felt closer to those in her own year, over older Teddy who was something like a distant cousin. In fact, Victoire was so beautiful and bright that she surely had someone special in her heart already, a boy from her classes that was in love with her. Teddy had seen her studying with the Goldstein boy in the library on more than one occasion.
He felt like an idiot. He should have known better. Now things between the two of them were going to be awkward and strained and ruined. It had been years since the Potter-Weasley clan had held a full family reunion, but when they did, Teddy would most certainly have to avoid it. He'd blown it, and he could never face Victoire Weasley again.
Leaping out of his seat, Teddy stormed out of the hall, feeling dark and muddled and tired. He was going to collapse into bed and not come out for the rest of the day. Let his professors wonder where he was in class; he didn't care. It was the most miserable day of his life; he wouldn't have been surprised to see his own personal rain cloud appear over his head. There was a little bit of magic for everything, after all.
He got as far as the stairs, his foot on the first step, before she stopped him. “Teddy!” He turned, a shock of surprise blooming in his chest, and looked at Victoire, who was flushed and wide-eyed. “Where were you going?” Victoire asked, clutching her bag tightly to her chest.
“Upstairs,” Teddy said dully, confused. “What do you care?”
She looked down, with the beginnings of a smile tugging on her lips. “I got your card.”
“Yeah, so?” He didn't want to hear her say it now, that she would never be his valentine. He couldn't bear it.
Were there tears in her eyes, as she looked up at him? Teddy hesitated, his heart racing. “I was going to wait until later, when we could be alone,” Victoire said quietly. “But I will be your valentine, Teddy. If you really meant what you wrote.”
“What?” He could hardly believe what he was hearing, what he was seeing as Victoire smiled up at him with the most beautiful expression he had ever seen on a person.
“You took my heart, too, you know,” Victoire said. She laughed. “It was silly of us not to admit it to one another sooner, wasn't it?”
“Victoire,” Teddy said, feeling breathless. He stepped off the stairs and turned to her properly, his mouth agape and his stomach doing somersaults. “Are you - do you mean it? Really?”
She laughed again, and came closer, fluttering her eyelashes. “Yes, Teddy, I really mean it,” she said, and Teddy's heart exploded when she pressed her lips to his cheek. “Happy Valentine's Day,” she whispered, as a burst of hot excitement rippled up Teddy's arms and legs.
“Happy Valentine's Day,” Teddy replied, in awe. He was trembling, and he grinned at her, his dearest friend. “Let's go together to Hogsmeade this weekend. We'll have some tea.” He thought of sitting across from Victoire at Madam Puddifoot's, and felt like he was standing in the brightest, warmest ray of sunshine that magic could muster.
She hugged him tightly, sighing into his neck. “Yes, that would be lovely,” she said in a rush, and Teddy decided that today was not the very best day in his entire life, because he had so many wonderful days ahead of him, where he and Victoire would be having so much more fun.
