When Teddy was still a baby, Harry made a promise to himself that when Teddy turned eleven and headed to Hogwarts on the first of September-he, Harry, would be there to see him off. He wanted to give Teddy the sense of family and love that he had never had when he was eleven and about to board the very same train.
Oh yes, he had Hagrid but not on that particular day when he boarded the Hogwarts Express. On that day, he had nobody. His uncle and aunt just carelessly dropped him off-laughing because they didn’t think that there really was a magical platform.
So no, he didn’t have a loving send off to Hogwarts and Harry desperately wanted to give Teddy, and any future children he and Ginny have just that.

Harry and Teddy stood side by side looking in the direction of the pillar that was the magical entrance to Platform nine and three quarters. To the muggles, they were seemed to be having quite a discussion about the architecture of the pillar.
“Harry, I’m scared.” Teddy admitted to Harry quietly.
He did not want to disappoint his beloved godfather so this seemed like a terrible thing to admit to him but he could not help it. He was nervous about starting Hogwarts. Oh, he had heard all about the wonders of the magical school from Harry, his gran and the rest of the Weasleys, but it still seemed very frightening now that he was going himself.
Harry smiled at Teddy as he crouched down to his level. “I know that you are scared. It is scary starting a new school isn’t it? Like when your gran put you in Hills Elementary? You were scared then weren’t you on that first day? And then you went and saw that it wasn’t so scary? Well Hogwarts is the same. You’ll see.” Harry checked his watch and saw that it was almost ten to eleven.
“Come, let’s go and find your Aunt Ginny and Gran before you leave shall we?” Harry grasped Teddy’s hand tightly before rushing at the pillar. Within seconds, they had both passed through the magical barrier and found themselves staring at the big train. Crowds of students and their families were all around.
“Look!” Teddy yelled as he spotted the familiar hue of red that all the Weasleys had next to grey-white hue. Standing with Ginny and Andromeda were the other Weasleys whom had all come to see Teddy off.
With a happy shriek, he let go of Harry’s hand and raced to them. He jumped into arms and received hugs and kisses. Harry followed at a slower pace but he too received his own affection from the Weasleys.
A minute or two later, he and Teddy with the help of Ron loaded Teddy’s trunk onto the train. Then Teddy spent the rest of the time saying a teary goodbye to the others, including his gran.
At the piercing whistle of the train, Harry and Teddy walked together to the door of the train compartment. Teddy was teary-eyed as Harry helped him get on the train.
He hugged him tightly before saying, “You are going to have such a great time that you’ll forget all about us and home!”
“NO, I won’t!”
Harry chuckled, “No, I don’t suppose it will but you’ll see…Send me an owl as soon as possible alright? I want to know all about your new house and everything alright?”
With one last hug, Teddy turned and headed into the train compartment. As the train started to move, Harry waved goodbye.
He felt sad, it felt like yesterday, Teddy was only a baby and now he was off to Hogwarts. Before he knew it, also James and Albus would be leaving on the Hogwarts Express on the way to Hogwarts. Harry just hoped that time wouldn’t go so quickly.

Time had flown by so quickly. Now Teddy was entering his seventh year (as Head Boy no less-Harry couldn’t be more proud of him. He was positive that Remus and Tonks would be as proud as him, maybe even more), and James was beginning his first year.
Watching Teddy patiently answer James’ questions about Hogwarts-sidestepping the infamous question of how exactly do they do the sorting (a big tradition in the Weasley family), Harry smiled a sad smile. In just a few minutes, he would be putting James on the train. He couldn’t quite believe that the time had come but then he had known for eleven years this day would come.
Just at that moment, Ginny came to stand next to him. She sighed wistfully, “I can’t believe it that James is eleven and off to Hogwarts.” Echoing his own thoughts from minutes earlier. “He is still my baby.”
Harry sighed as well, “We knew that this time would come. As it will with Al and with Lily.” He gestured to his younger children who were standing with their cousin, clear envy on their faces or at least it was evident on Al’s face since at 9 years old, he understood where James was going. Lily, at 7 years old, wasn’t as interested in that more likely her jealousy was due to the fact that James would get to go on the big train (she was in a weird transport fascination stage).
The piercing whistle sounded notifying parents and students that the train would be leaving in just a few minutes’ time. Teddy brought James back to his parents for some final goodbyes.
Unlike Teddy six years before, James wasn’t scared and he was quite impatient to say his goodbyes and go on the train to find his friends.
Harry leaned over to Teddy and said, “Just look after him-the best you can. I know that he has his other cousins, especially Fred, but I’ll feel better knowing that you’re looking out for him.”
Teddy smirked more than a little amused by Harry’s behavior but said seriously, “sure thing.” At the final whistle, he gave Harry and Ginny one last little wave and stepped on the train which had begun to move.

Harry had thought that having gone through sending both Teddy and James off to Hogwarts would be enough experience for him to cope with sending Al off. It wasn’t. But then Harry was also more of an experienced parent to realize that the send off differed from each child just on the basis of their personality. Al was more like him and Teddy while James was probably more like the Weasleys and didn’t have any problems getting on the train.
And of course, Al had James who teased him mercilessly about the sorting and the fact that he might ended up in Slytherin of all places (delivered in perfect Ron Weasley fashion). Harry and Ginny had had a long talk with James about that in particular.
Not that Harry nor Ginny had a problem with Slytherin if that was the place that Hat decided to send Al. It had become a different house from the time they were there. Still Ambitious and Proud for the most part but there was no malicious intent on the part of the students.
Still Harry could sense Al’s unease even as James came bouncing up to tell them that he found Victorie, Bill and Fleur’s eldest daughter, snogging Teddy. Harry made a mental note to have a much needed discussion with Teddy.
As he hugged Al goodbye, Al whispered in his ear, **“What if I’m in Slytherin?”**
Harry crouched down to Albus’ level.
**”Albus Severus,” Harry said quietly, so that nobody by Ginny could hear, and she was tactful enough to pretend to be waving to Rose who was now on the train, “you were named for two headmasters of Hogwarts. One of them was a Slytherin and he was probably the bravest man I ever knew.”
“But just say-“
“-the Slytherin house will have gained an excellent student won’t it? It doesn’t matter to us, Al. But if it matters to you, you’ll be able to choose Gryffindor over Slytherin. The Sorting Hat takes your choice into account.”
“Really?”
“It did for me,” said Harry . **
Just at that second, the piercing whistle of the train whistled loudly and Harry quickly helped Albus onto the train. **The train began to move, and Harry walked alongside it, watching his son’s thin face, already ablaze with excitement. Harry kept smiling and waving, even though it was like a little bereavement, watching his son glide away from him…**

It was Lily’s turn to be sent off to Hogwarts and Harry was filled with sadness. Her going to Hogwarts meant that his children were all half grown and on their way to be independent adults. Already 14 year old James was at the half way point in terms of years spent at Hogwarts with Al not far behind.
He couldn’t believe that his little girl would be joining her brothers and cousins at Hogwarts. He watched her excitedly talk to Rose and Hugo about Hogwarts. She had longed to go to Hogwarts ever since she had realized where her brothers and cousins would disappear to for the better part of the year.
Still, she was his and Ginny’s baby and it was difficult to think of letting her go but he had to.
When she came to give him his goodbye hug and kiss, he just whispered in her ear, “I love you and I know that you will do wonderfully.” She gave him one last hug and a brilliant smile before turning to do the same to Ginny.
Just like James, three years before, she didn’t waste any time getting on the train and going to find family members and friends.
At the final whistle of the train, Harry waved at his three children and felt the sadness settle in his heart.
There would no longer be any first-time leaving on a Hogwarts train.
