He had always disappointed his family. Both his parents had strong magic, and everyone expected that he would be the same. They watched and waited for him to show some sign of it.
Neville waited too, waited and hoped for something to happen. He didn't have to be a powerful wizard, or a skilled one, or a brave one. He just needed not to be a Squib.
His aunts and uncles tutted over him. Gran said nothing, but sometimes he caught her watching him with an assessing look in her eye. But still, nothing happened.
And then one day... One day, he bounced.

He's still not sure how it happened. He's known her since she was a child, watched her tag along after Sirius, stumbling to keep up. He remembers James showing her his stolen Snitch, how she laughed to watch him release it and catch it over and over, then changed her hair to the same golden hue.
As a woman grown she still has that same sense of whimsy, that same desire to be in the thick of things, the corners of her eyes crinkling as she smiles.
He's not sure when he first knew that he loved her, but he knows why.

Charlie had always been different. As a kid, he was happiest playing with the gnomes in the garden, or teaching tricks to his rat. At Hogwarts he spent most of his free time in the Owlery. Sure, he had friends, but somehow he preferred the company of animals. They were simple, loyal, no deceptions, just friendship.
And dragons... dragons were amazing. He loved their sweet, earthy smell, their inquisitive eyes, the way they would tilt their wings to shade him from the sun's glare or nuzzle against him in search of a treat. He wouldn't trade his life for the world.

It's a dying art. Kids these days are more interested in the flash-bang, the showy stuff. Wand-makers are craftsmen, artisans. You can't just throw any old thing together and expect it to cast good spells. Knowing what you're doing, that's the key.
You seem a likely lad. How would you like to learn?

But it's not a bad life. Death. There are plenty of other ghosts here at Hogwarts, so it's impossible to feel lonely. And being the ghost of the friendliest house means that there are always students to talk to. The first-years are the best, all wide-eyed and curious. Many of them have never even seen a ghost before, can you imagine?
Still, I'm not sure that I wouldn't give it all up for a taste of something from the kitchens.
