coming from somewhere close around him

Scraggly shoes with dirty laces
scuff around the garbage
searching

A loud THUNK

Head turns with a start
black hair ruffles in the slight breeze
a smell of over-ripened bananas

Thud. Skip. Thud.

Thud. Thud. Thud.

The loud cries are distant
and the boy lets out a deep breath
but the ticking has stopped

He closes his eyes
to follow the sound of a memory
but finds a sharp twisting around his heart

A footstep back

squish

A grimace.

Light glints from the corner
Hesitation lingers in the air
Feet move forward

like a puppet

A CRUNCH on the gravel

A manic joy
A terrible happiness

Home beckons

Thudthudthudthud

His racing heart
His trembling hands
A golden stopwatch

They are home

A slithering sound swells around them
and the boy bends down
to pick up the watch

It sizzles in his hand
and red eyes reflect
in the 10:41 AM
