It had come as an unexpected, pleasant surprise when Nymphadora Tonks had rolled over in bed, expecting to drape her arm across a pillow, but instead sliding it across a bare chest. She yawned, her eyes still glued together with sleep as her other arm found a hand, whose fingers entwined with her own.
It was a rough hand; scarred and hard with calluses, and it took her a minute to work out who it belonged to; her head was throbbing something fierce. When she did figure it out, she almost laughed out loud; laughed because no matter how much she wanted it to be true it was ridiculous. She wasn’t in bed with Remus Lupin. No, it wasn’t possible. He wouldn’t do that. She wouldn’t do that. He was dating Sirius. There was absolutely no way she was sleeping with hi-
“Dora… don’t you have work soon?”
His warm breath in her air jolted her into reality. This was happening. Slowly, rubbing the sleep from her eyes, she sat up, yawning again and stretching. She was definitely in his room. Books littered the desk, or sat in precarious stacks along the walls. Her clothes were the only mess, sprawled haphazardly across the floor. Blinking, she turned to look at him, biting her lip.
It was only then she realized she was naked.
Her face went bright red and she let out a small squeak as she pulled the blankets to her chest. This could not be happening. They were not in bed together. Naked.
She could hardly remember any of the night before. This didn’t bode well at all.
He chuckled at her, leaning towards her to brush a stray strand of magenta hair behind her ear.
“Morning.” His smile didn’t look pained at all.
“Did we...” She let the question hang. Looking away from her, at the wall, he nodded.
“Your boyfriend’s going to kill me.” Swearing under her breath, she flung she sheets back- who cared if he saw her naked now, he’d obviously seen it all before last night- and started pulling her clothes on as quickly as she could without falling over.
“Dora, please-”
“I have to go.” She cut him off, pulling her skirt on. “Before Sirius comes looking for you.”
“Don’t be like this!”
“Like this?” She turned back to him, dressed now, pulling her hair into a messy pony tail. “Like what? We had sex!” she hissed. “And I don’t think your boyfriend would be too happy if he found out.”
She was so angry with herself. Yes, she liked him. An awful, awful lot. But she’d refrained from acting on her feelings, because she refused to be a boyfriend snatcher. It had happened to her and she knew what it felt like. And Sirius was her cousin! She’d never dreamt of doing that to him.
“Calm down, please!” he was out of bed now, half dressed and holding out one of her boots. She snatched it, glaring.
“Fine.”
“Look, Dor- Tonks.” He corrected himself. “It’s not your fault. You were drunk... really drunk. And I was drunk... but going upstairs was my idea. Kissing was yours, though.” He added the last part like an afterthought.
She sighed. “I can’t remember. Any of it... my head...”
His face brightened slightly and he was on his knees, rummaging through a box sitting under his desk. After a few seconds he pulled out a small bottle with a cork stopper; it was glass and filled with an acid green coloured, thick liquid.
“Sober up! You’ll feel better after, even if it is disgusting, I promise.”
With a smile more like a grimace, she took the medicine, crinkling up her face as she swallowed. Taking a deep breath, she leaned back against the wall next to the mirror.
“Don’t you feel bad?”
“Of course I do! But...” he sighed. “I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but things between me and Sirius... well they haven’t been so great lately.”
Of course she had noticed! She shrugged. “I’d still feel bad. I do.”
“I know, I know... it’s complicated. And I feel horrible. But... it didn’t feel wrong. At the time. It felt right.” He shrugged. “I don’t think we can tell him.”
She shook her head, reeling with horror at the very idea.
The door opened, and Sirius strolled in.
“There you are! I can’t believe you Remus, you left me passed out in a pool of my own drool! What kind of boyfriend are you?”
She could picture that, now. Sirius passed out at one end of the table, snoring, while she drunkenly moved closer and closer until she was thinking why the hell not, and suddenly they had been kissing; proper, properly snogging, hands all over each other.
Fighting to keep the blush down, she turned to the mirror under the pretence of fixing her hair.
“What are you doing in here?”
“Aaaaah... better mirror.” She lied. “Honestly, you gave me the room with the one coated with dirt? It’s not like he uses this one!”
Sirius grinned. “Oh, I do though, I like to admire myself in the mornings...”
“Right, I'm leaving...” hurrying out, she turned just in time to see Sirius wrapping his arms around Remus. But he was still watching her.
She felt uncomfortable about that. And awkward too, no matter where she went in Grimauld place. She couldn’t stand the feeling that was gnawing away at her. She’d betrayed her cousin’s trust and slept with Remus. Merlin knows she’d wanted to for so long... but she hadn’t actually expected it to happen.
She threw herself into her work, but she was so distracted that she couldn’t do anything right. When Kingsley disarmed her after a minute in a practical training exercise, she finally gave up, throwing her wand to the ground with a clatter.
“You alright?” Even his deep, soothing voice wasn’t calming her as it usually would.
She sat down in the middle of the gym, crossing her legs. He sat opposite, confused as he tried to read her worried face.
“I’ve fucked up, Kingsley. I’ve made the worst mistake ever. And I don’t know what to do.” She’d never felt quite this lost and helpless before. Why was it that on a battlefield she was able to kick ass as well as any man, but when it came to relationships she was a bumbling 13 year old who had no idea what she was doing? It drove her mad.
“What did you do?”
She knew she could trust him not to tell... but she still wasn’t sure she was ready for him to know. For anyone to know. “I... I slept with someone. Someone I really, really shouldn’t have.”
To her surprise, he smiled. “Remus?”
She was taken aback. “How did you-”
“I saw the two of you last night, thick as thieves. It wasn’t hard to guess, I knew it would happen sometime. You know he likes you just as much as you do, don’t you?”
She shrugged. “I don’t know! But what do I do? I mean... Sirius! He’s my cousin, and I can’t not tell him...” she looked up at him, chewing on her lip.
“I think,” he said slowly, “you need to talk to Remus. If you’re going to tell him, you should do it together.”
She went looking for Remus after work. But he wasn’t in his room, or the library, and he hadn’t been downstairs in the kitchen when she’d popped in to announce her presence. Closing his bedroom door behind her, she sighed.
“He’s not here.”
She jumped a little; turning she saw Sirius ambling down the hall, the over head light flickering, then shutting off completely.
“Merlin Sirius, you nearly gave me a heart attack!”
He shrugged, his eyes staring at her. “Why are you looking for him?”
She tried to be casual. “He was going to lend me a book. A tale of two cities, he said I had to read it.” Not completely a lie, he had told her he would lend it to her.
“Ah. Well, that’s reassuring. I mean, here I was, thinking you wanted to fuck his brains out again.”
They stood in absolute silence, and all the colour drained from her face.
“I... I don’t know what you-”
“Don’t. Don’t play me like that. I'm not stupid, you weren’t exactly subtle this morning! And I saw you kissing last night! I wasn’t as asleep as you both thought.” He was so close; their noses were almost touching.
“Sirius... Please, we were both drunk, I'm so sorry, I don’t even remember-”
“Oh, is that supposed to make me feel better? BECAUSE IT DOESNT! You stay the hell away from MY boyfriend if you know what’s good for you, got that? I don’t want to see you so much as look at each other, alright? Leave us alone! And you stay the hell away from me too, cousin.” His brow was knotted, his eyes were darker than usual and his face was set in a snarl as he spat the last word. Leaving her holding the wall for support he stalked off, slamming doors behind him.
So much for telling him together.
Everything in the morning then- it had all been an act, to see if they would confess, or if he was going to have to confront them. If only he’d waited a little longer... not that it would have really made things better, less hurtful.
She would do what he said though. She owed him that.
For the next three weeks, Tonks avoided Grimauld Place at all costs. She spent her evenings alone in her small, dingy flat, watching Friends on the old muggle TV and eating Chinese take out. She missed meetings where possible, taking late shifts at work, or telling Kingsley she had a head ache, or any other excuse she could think of.
She thought Remus would have gotten the message. If not from her avoiding him, then from Sirius’ warning. Surely he would have yelled at him too?
So she was surprised when, upon her first arrival in Grimauld place in nearly a month, she was almost automatically dragged into the hall broom closet; even before she had time to knock over that stupid troll leg umbrella stand.
She couldn’t see him too well in the darkness, but what she could see looked like hell.
There was huge bags under his eyes, and she wondered if he’d slept at all in the last few weeks. He looked drawn, almost ill, and when he spoke, his voice was raspy.
“Where have you been?”
She shrugged, looking away. “Ive been busy. Remus I really have to go...”
“he told you he knew, didn’t he?”
There was no point denying it. “How bad was your screaming match?”
“Didn’t get one. He didn’t tell me.” Remus paused. “I figured it out. He didn’t care that you weren’t there. He was getting possessive... it wasn’t like him.”
“He said I had to stay away from you. From him. I don’t want to come between you two, I never meant to-”
He gently placed a finger on her lips, silencing her. “Tell me one thing, Dora. Just one thing. Because I’ve been hearing things. But I thought we were close enough that you would have told me yourself. Do you have... feelings for me?”
She didn’t reply for a minute. She’d dreamt of him asking her- after admitting his own feelings, of course. A lot of the things she’d wished for hadn’t turned out the way she’d wanted them to recently though.
“Yes.” She said simply. That ought to be enough.
He was quiet for the shortest of moments; then he breathed something that sounded like “good”, and suddenly he was pulling her closer and his lips were moving against hers urgently, and his touch was bringing back forgotten memories of that night, and here, finally, something was going the way she had wanted. As kisses went, this one was pretty damn amazing.
“I want to be with you.” He whispered in her ear.”
“Sirius?”
He shrugged, trailing kisses down her neck. “He’ll be hurt... for a while. But he knows as well as I do we weren’t going to stay together for much longer. It’s just not the same as before. It’s not there.”
She pulled back. “You’re not breaking up with him because of me?”
He shook his head. “No. Well. Mostly not.”
Mostly not, she could live with. smiling softly, she pulled him back to her. She could miss one more meeting.
