Draco walked along the avenue, orange leaves crunching underfoot as he passed laughing Jack O Lanterns, the gourds cleaned out and decorated for the Samhain holiday. He watched the sunlight filtering through the trees, glowing gold and warm on the sidewalk. He picked up his pace as the address he was heading to finally appeared in his line of sight. Kids played in the yards and he knew that he had made the right choice. This was a nice neighbourhood; his son would be happy here. He turned at last to gaze happily at the home he had finally found.

Samhain arrived on a cool and blustery day. Kids skipped along the sidewalks carrying their orange plastic gourds to collect their candy. Harry’s son, Albus was dressed as a vampire, James was a knight and Lily was a princess with a long gold gown. Although he had been divorced from Ginny for several years now, he had managed to convince her to let him take the kids trick or treating. It was the first year that his neighbourhood was going to allow it, and the kids were excited. Harry had to admit, he was too, watching their faces light up.

Harry herded the kids from door to door until they came to the last house on the block. Harry didn’t know how to feel as they neared the home. He was aware of who had purchased it, but hadn’t taken time to greet his new neighbour yet. He followed the kids warily, trailing after James’ orange cloak as they bounded up to the door. He stared down at the Jack O Lantern on the stoop while the door opened. When the kids held up their gourds and yelled “Trick or Treat” Harry looked up into the eyes of Draco Malfoy.

Orange was the colour of the Draco’s hair when Harry stopped to notice it. It must have been the reflection of the Samhain lights shining around the doorway. “Potter,” Draco drawled as he deposited a handful of muggle sweets into each of the children’s gourds. “I heard you lived around here.” Harry nodded in acknowledgement and extended his hand. “Welcome to the neighbourhood, Draco” he said, hoping that his use of Draco’s name would set the tone for their future encounters. Before he could say another word his little vampire tugged on his pants, and he waved as he left.

Harry was just rounding the bin of oranges when he caught a flash of white blond hair out of the corner of his eye, but this time it seemed to be lower. Sure enough, when he looked up, there stood Draco with a young boy, about Al’s age. Harry nodded with a smile, pleased when Draco returned the gesture. The young boy looked at Harry and smiled.

Slowly he consumed each morsel until the entire cupcake was devoured, and smiled, licking his fingers clean as he became aware of giggling. He looked up in to the eyes of his boyfriend, whose face was turning red with the effort of trying to hide his laughter. Harry looked at him quizzically and Draco leaned in to lick a bit of frosting that was left on Harry’s nose. Jack o Lantern and Vampire cupcakes lay forgotten by the side as their joyful kisses turned to cuddles.
