He’d heard the reasoning behind being sent to a muggle high school so many times. His parents wanted him to know how to live like a muggle too, because that was “safer”. He didn’t understand why it was fair to send him at seventeen, when he had no hope of doing well because none of this useless stuff was on Hogwart’s curriculum. What did English Literature matter? He was a wizard.
He also didn’t understand why it had to be an American highschool. Why not an English one? Why wouldn’t that have worked? His parents had said it was so he could learn about other cultures. Fine, he’d said, send me to Wales instead.
They hadn’t. So now, here he was. How his friends would laugh to see him. James Potter, eldest son of the Harry Potter in a muggle American school, in Lima, Ohio.
Who the hell was William McKinley anyway?
The first thing he had to do, on his first day of school, on his first day in a new country, was to see the guidance counsellor. Whatever that was. She would give him maps and help him organize his classes and be there for anything he might need. He wondered if putting him out of his misery would count as something he needed.
The problem was, he needed a map to get to the office of the guidance counsellor so she could give him maps. Clearly, this method was extremely flawed.
“Excuse me,” He said, to the first person he saw. He didn’t look very friendly, but his parents didn’t look very insane. Appearances could be deceiving. Even if this persons appearance was hulking and muscular and aggressive. “Could you tell me where I could find the guidance counsellor?”
“Fag,” The boy grunted in response, before laughing and bumping fists with his equally as troll-like friend. What? What did cigarettes have to do with anything? Did he mean the guidance counsellor was outside having a smoke? He knew he could really do with a cigarette but really, could he not be a little more useful? He frowned after the two trolls. Things would be so much easier if he had the Marauders Map, if he had one that would actually work here because nobody would have sent his grandfather to a stupid muggle school.
“Are you new?” He turned round, finding himself looking down on a short girl wearing a sweater with a unicorn on. She dressed like Lily had when she was younger - surely they didn’t let seven year olds into this school? “You must be, nobody else would ask Azimio for directions. Hi, I’m Rachel Berry. Did you say you were looking for Miss Pillsbury? I was just heading that way because I wanted to discuss some things regarding my future with her, so you can come with me if you want.” James blinked at her.
“What?” He hadn’t meant to sound so rude, but really, what else could he say? This small girl was just rambling at him about futures and berries and he’d really thought that considering they shared a language, he’d actually be able to understand anything that was said to him here. So far, that idea was being proven completely and entirely wrong.
“Oh, you’re not from America, are you?” The girl grinned at him and started again. This time, she was speaking incredibly slowly. It reminded James of his granddad every time he tried to use the telephone. “My name is Rachel Berry. I will help you-” On the word you, she pointed at James. “find the guidance counsellor. Do you understand?”
“Uh, yes,” James said, nodding. “I’m from England. I speak English.” Rachel didn’t seem bothered by this fact as she looped her arm through his and started to walk down the hall, dragging James with her. He was going to be sending a very angry owl to his parents tonight.
