He was a most gorgeous brute named Buckbeak
Not yet tamed by a half-giant named Hagrid
They met at mid-day, the thick drops of rain
creating an off-kilter pitter-patter on Hagrid’s many keys
The rain stops, a ray of sun slices through the air
Hagrid bows his heavy head with a smile

The Hippogriff bows and Hagrid swears he sees him smile
He approaches the Hippogriff and says a soft hello to Buckbeak
The half-giant strokes the hippogriff who snorts a contented puff of air
He can’t wait to show Harry and in his mind he can hear him crying, ‘Hagrid! Hagrid!’
The world is ripe with anticipation, he’ll be more than just the Keeper of the Keys
A professor, the best professor, with a class of hippogriffs and all will be right as rain

The morning began with heavy rain
and Buckbeak is oddly comforted by a half-giant with a smile
who jangled as he bowed from a brilliant set of keys
He looks at the stranger haughtily for he is Buckbeak,
a proud and noble creature who won’t be tamed by this…Hagrid
Still, he bows; there’s a new sort of freedom coming, he can smell it in the air

It’s a burgeoning ripe scent of freedom that lingers in the air
and as he follows the half-giant, he takes pride in the new falling rain
The half-giant tries to rub the water off his face, so Buckbeak lifts a wing for Hagrid
It’s out of the hippogriff’s nature but the half-giant breaks into a toothy smile
‘Why yer just wonderful,’ Hagrid says happily, ‘and gorgeous, Buckbeak.’
They walk away from the pasture with a musical jangling from Hagrid’s keys

Once they stop, Buckbeak misses the musical sound of the keys
Hagrid sucks in a breath and releases it into the air
“We’re home,” he says, “We’re home, Buckbeak.”
The heavy drops have lightened into a sprinkling rain
Hagrid stands in front of a hut with a beaming smile
‘Wait ‘til ye meet the students, they be calling me Professor Hagrid!’

The students do call him Professor Hagrid
along with some souring remarks about ‘The Keeper of the Keys’
but the half-giant pretends not to hear, giving his students a boisterous smile
There’s a boy whose special to the giant, so the hippogriff takes him into the air
Nothing could bring this day down, not even a thunderous rain
Not until a pale bratty boy, then there’s blood, and cries of ‘No, Buckbeak!’

The cries aren’t for Buckbeak and this is a frightened Hagrid
There’s no rain but there’s an almost angry jangle of keys
It’s stagnant air consumed by a pale boy’s smile
