He stole away in the middle of the night, replaced with a criminal who preferred the life imprisonment than the death sentence he would have got if his past had caught up with him. It had been Albus’ idea to work at the school. Gellert had initially had dreams of teaching but he was firmly put in his place and had his magic bound. A woman who discovered him was turned into a cat. That was the first sign of Dumbledore’s devotion to the lie. The vast amount of time he spent making copious amounts of polyjuice potion was another.
