One of the things that college has taught me is the value of knowing who you are, especially if you are going into a helping profession. You have know who you are and be ok with that before you can help others.
Part of that acceptance is self identification. The names that we give ourselves have tremendous power over who we are. Allowing yourself to be called one thing over another not only labels you as such, but you accept that label at face value. Yeah....self identification is a big deal.
My point in all this is that being raised pentecostal I had always self identified as somewhat religious, even though the behavior of most so called "Christian" folk makes me cringe.
Friday for the very first time I self identified as an atheist...and I was ok with that. It felt good not to claim a mantle that I didn't really believe in. I thought that perhaps being in the middle of Jesusland™ it would cause a stir, but no one said anything.
So here's to being who you really are...and being ok with that.
