Summary: Newlyweds Harry and Ginny Potter decide to celebrate their anniversary every month. Sometimes, life-changing decisions occur in just one month, especially in the fall.
Author's Note: My long time beta and friend Trelawney2213 helped make this story more readable.
Ginny Weasley had been in love with the idea of Harry Potter since she first heard about the baby who didn’t have anyone to love him. The story of “The Boy Who Lived” had been her favorite bedtime story as long as she could remember.
‘When I am big like Bill and Charlie, I’m going to find Harry Potter and rescue him from his mean aunt and uncle,’ Ginny confided in her father.
‘Princess, he’d be a lucky boy to have you as a friend,’ Arthur would always reply.
‘He will fall in love with me so I can wear beautiful lace wedding robes and we will kiss.’ Ginny was a little fuzzy about what happened next because she’d never been to a wedding but she knew that she and Harry Potter would live happily ever after.
The year Ginny was three, Father Christmas brought her a “Dance with Me Harry Potter Doll” that was as tall as she was when she put her feet in the elastics under his soft stuffed feet. They danced Christmas night until she got so tired that her biggest brother carried them both up to her bed. Harry slept with her every night until she was eight.
The September that Ron was eleven and started school, she actually saw Harry Potter for a few minutes when her mum helped him figure out how to get through the barrier to the Hogwarts Express at King’s Cross. He even smiled and waved at her when she chased the train as far as she could, crying because she had to stay home a whole year more.
When Ron wrote home that he and Harry were both in Gryffindor, he didn’t tell much about what they were doing but Percy’s letters said that they were fast friends and getting in even more trouble that the twins. Ginny couldn’t imagine that. George was the one who wrote that Harry was the youngest Seeker in one hundred years but it was Fred’s short letter that told them about Harry’s broom being jinxed to buck him off and how he caught the Snitch in his mouth to win the game. The letter from Professor McGonagall didn’t say much about how Ron got hurt during “the best-played game of chess Hogwarts had seen in many years”. Percy said he got a lot of points for Gryffindor for that and so did Harry and their friend who was a girl. Ginny wondered if Harry had been hurt, too.
Ginny saw Harry again at the train station when Ron and the twins and Percy came back from school but Mum wouldn’t even let her point at him, much less run up to him and make him fall in love with her. The boys teased her so much about “being sweet on Harry Potter” that it really made her mad. Then the twins and Ron rescued Harry in their father’s flying car and he stayed the rest of the summer. Ginny thought Harry was nicer than her brothers but she got nervous that he wouldn’t like her so she got all clumsy and shy around him.
It took most of the next few years, learning to be friends and more, for Harry and Ginny to fall in love. The horrible year before The Battle of Hogwarts tested them, but after that, their years as boyfriend and girlfriend grew into a more serious relationship.
It was exactly ten years to the day after they first met that Harry took Ginny to King’s Cross, knelt on one knee, and said, ‘I have loved you for a long time and it would make me happy if you would agree to be my wife.’ He took her hand and put his mother’s engagement ring on the proper finger. Ginny pulled him up and snogged him properly.
‘I’ll take that as a ‘yes’. Would you mind getting married on your birthday so I’ll never forget either date?’ Ginny readily agreed and they Apparated to the Burrow to tell Ginny’s parents.
Molly began to cry as soon as she heard their news. ‘Oh Arthur, isn’t that the most romantic thing you have ever heard? Proposing on the anniversary that they met at King’s Cross.’ Arthur wiped a tear from his eye and hugged Molly.
Ginny thought the date Harry chose was practical. By August eleventh, she’d have finished Spring Quidditch and have the whole month of August and the first three weeks of September off. The Holyhead Harpies Chasers didn’t have to report for training for the Fall Quidditch Season until Monday, September 16, so she and Harry could have six weeks to themselves. Harry had finished his training as an Auror two years earlier and had been saving up vacation time so they could have a six-week honeymoon.
Molly got busy on wedding preparations right away. Ginny wanted to be married in the back garden of the Burrow so that limited the number of guests. She found a picture of the kind of dress she wanted in an old magazine and asked Madame Malkin if she could make something like the American movie star had worn when she married a Prince. She asked Hermione, Luna, and Hannah to be her bridesmaids.
The night before the wedding, Harry, Ginny, and the rest of the wedding party visited Fred’s grave after the rehearsal and felt his blessing. The wedding was perfect. It was small enough to be intimate but big enough to have all those that they wanted there. Minister of Magic Shacklebolt presided and Hermione caught the bouquet.
Harry and Ginny had a wonderful honeymoon. Their Portkeys took them to the most important Wizarding sites all over Europe. They were on a magical island in the Greek Sea exactly one month after their wedding. It was Harry, ever the romantic, who arranged an evening out at a fine restaurant and asked Ginny if they could celebrate their anniversary every month instead of just once a year. She loved the idea.
Harry and Ginny returned from their honeymoon to Grimmauld Place because that is where Harry had been living. Kreacher had made the lower floors more pleasant and it was convenient to the Ministry. Ginny had to practice with her team during the week but was free to return home every night unless Gwenog was on a rampage about the team’s performance or it was the night before a match.
‘I’d like a place of our own some day,’ said Harry, ‘Maybe we could start looking for a place in the country. We’re going to need room for a family eventually.’
‘I’d like that, Mr Potter,’ said Ginny with a wink. ‘There’s no reason we can’t get some family practice in while we are waiting for the right time for a baby.’
‘’I like the way you think!’ said Harry, picking her up and carrying her up the stairs.
That night while they ate dinner in their favorite restaurant, they talked about what kind of house they wanted to look for.
‘I’d like it to be in the country,’ said Ginny. ‘When we have children, I want them to have what I had when I was little. I want them to have room to grow.’
‘And space for a Quiddich pitch,’ added Harry. ‘Our children will have flying in their genes.’
‘In their jeans?’ asked Ginny.
‘It’s a Muggle expression. You’ll have to talk to Hermione about it.’
‘We should call Madam Chambers and get her to send us some listings. She found the Burrow for my parents and the flat that Percy and Audrey live in. We need to decide whether we want an all Magic house or one where Muggle things will work.’
‘Are there mixed houses?’ asked Harry. ‘I think your dad would like big screen television. Hermione and Ron can play video games in their flat.’
‘Ask Madam Chambers. She’ll know if there are any mixed houses with trees around them available.’

Madam Chambers met with them twice to talk about available houses in the country. They told her that they wanted a house with land around it so they’d have room for a family when the time was right.
‘We want a place where there’s room to grow,’ said Harry, smiling at the prospect of a family.
‘With magical trees around it so we will be safe,’ added Ginny.
‘Location, location, location,’ repeated Madame Chambers. Ginny wondered if she realized that they could Apparate anywhere they wanted to be, but just smiled and took the folder with the pictures of possible homes and the map.
Harry and Ginny picked out a few of the houses they wanted to look at and decided to spend their next month anniversary looking at the houses that they liked best. The Holyhead Harpies had their only Saturday Bye so Ginny was available to spend the whole day with Harry.
By October eleventh, the leaves on the trees were starting to change colors. They wanted to enjoy walking in the leaves so they Apparated about a half mile from the first house they wanted to look at. They walked through a forest, hand in hand, kicking fallen leaves until they spiraled around them. The couple whirled around with the leaves and got so dizzy that they fell down together, laughing.
After a cuddle, Ginny picked the leaves out of her hair and said, ‘I think Madam Chambers might be waiting for us already.’ Harry stood and pulled her up and they went hand in hand to meet the Estate Agent.
The first house was too small for a family and it was too close to two other houses. They’d have no privacy at all. The second house was a mansion, too big and too fancy to suit their needs.
‘Maybe the third will be a charm,’ said Harry as they touched the Portkey to the next house on their list.
They looked at each other with big smiles on their faces when they arrived at the third house. It was set on the edge of a forest but had a huge meadow right behind it, just the right size for a Quidditch pitch. There was a tree-lined lane leading to the front door and every tree was ablaze with bright red-orange leaves. The house was big but had a section that was just one-story so it wasn’t overwhelming.
‘Five bedrooms, four baths with a large family kitchen,’ announced Madame Chambers. ‘It was built by a reputable magical contracting company, specifically for a family that wanted a mix of magical and Muggle appliances. It even has its own generator for electricity.’ She placed her wand on the door and said, ’Alohomora.’
Harry and Ginny went through the open door into a wide entry hall with a staircase in back, leading to the upper story. They looked at sunny lounge on one side. Ginny thought another door must lead to the kitchen so she went through it and saw a large room with space for sofas beside the big table that was already there. There was a floor to ceiling fireplace for cooking and a separate one ready to be connected to the Floo Network.
‘The family kitchen is expandable and comes with the table that is charmed to seat between two and twenty. It has both magical and Muggle appliances and torches and bulbs. There’s a mudroom and full bath by the back entrance- so handy for little muddy witches and wizards.’
Harry and Ginny smiled at the room full of cloak hooks and cupboards right next to the big bath and the laundry room, complete with a washing cauldron and Muggle dryer.
‘There’s a study in the other ground floor wing with a bedroom and en suite bath next to it. Upstairs is a master suite with a bath and nursery attached. There are also three more bedrooms that share a bath.’
Ginny and Harry admired the slate floors in the foyer and kitchen and the hardwood floors gleaming in the lounge, study, and bedroom. They went up the wide stairs and were delighted with the view from the master bedroom. Ginny climbed into the big tub in the bathroom and commented that there was room for two.
‘I think we’ve found our house,’ said Harry. Ginny nodded.
The stopped in the adjoining nursery and looked at the three bedrooms that looked out over the forest. Both of them had big grins as they thought about filling them with small Potters someday.
Madam Chambers was waiting for them at the big kitchen table with several papers for them to sign. ‘I thought that this one was perfect for you, just beginning your life together.’ She handed them quills and they signed the papers to transfer money from their Gringotts accounts to buy their perfect house. ‘We should close by this time next month so you can start picking out furniture. Remember you don’t need a kitchen table and already have twenty chairs. Most of them are shrunk in the cupboard next to the fireplace.’ She shook hands with each of them and Apparated away.
Harry and Ginny walked around the house talking about what they would need to look for to furnish a few rooms. Harry did not want to use any of the furniture from the former Black house, so they needed everything. When they finished their list, they locked up magically and walked around the house, admiring the trees in full colour.
‘What kind of trees are the bright red leaves from?’ Harry asked Ginny, holding out a particularly colourful one.
‘That’s from the rowan tree. It’s very wise to plant one by your home for protection against evil spirits. We have a whole lane lined with them. ’
‘And this hairy yellow one?’ he asked, pulling it out of her hair.
‘That’s a hazel, the kind that has nuts, and it is my birth tree. My wand is made from hazel.’
‘Do I have a birth tree? Is Holly a magic tree?’
‘Right in one,’ said Ginny, laughing. ‘Holly is the magical tree from July 8 to August 4. That’s probably why your wand is made of it. It is supposed o be a symbol of masculine energy and firmness.’
Harry waggled his eyebrows. “I can demonstrate how well I take after my tree. Let’s Apparate straight to our bed. We have a couple of hours before we need to dress for our anniversary out and we can start looking for our new bed tomorrow.’
*******************************************************************************
As Madame Chambers had predicted, Harry and Ginny were able to move into their new home by the date of their four-month anniversary. It was Remembrance Day so they were still wearing bright red poppies as they directed the movers as they placed the shrunken furniture where they wanted it and expanded them to their regular size.
Ginny and Harry made the bed in their room and were tempted to just fall into it but were hungry so decided to eat the food that Molly and Arthur had brought so Ginny wouldn’t have to cook. She and her mother had stocked the pantry, cold cupboard, and refrigerator-freezer with enough food for an army, or the Weasley family, whichever came first.
After eating their fill at the kitchen table, Harry suggested that they build a fire and cuddle on the new couch in the lounge. They talked about where they would put the flat screen television and DVD player. Harry said that he wanted to take Arthur along when they picked them out. Ginny was sure that a video game would be coming home with them, too. Harry spent enough time at Hermione and Ron’s playing with theirs.
‘How about some hot chocolate before we go up to break in our new bed?’ Harry grinned his approval. ‘I’ll put extra cinnamon in it, just for you,’ said Ginny with an answering grin.
When she returned with their steaming cups, she thought about how much had happened in the past few months and looked forward to growing, living, and loving - just the two of them for a while.
