Vicki jumped from the car, her heart racing, her walk hurried. She could only hope that Henry was still there although she didn’t have a clue as to what she would say to him, how she would actually find the words, when she was face to face with him after leaving his apartment in such a huff. That didn’t matter, she told herself, she would think of something, she hoped. Whatever emotions she was feeling she would have to be put aside, forced down and for the time being completely disregarded. All that mattered right now was keeping Henry here. Where he belonged, where she needed him. That was the main objection then she would deal with Mike and try to mend these fences and their broken hearts.

“The things I do.” she grumbled under her breath.

She would have to reach Henry fast, knowing that when Fitzroy decided to do something, whether it be smart or stupid, such as leave, he would do it. She began searching her coat for her cell phone, hoping she could head Henry off at the pass by giving him fair warning that she was on her way up and that he better keep his ass right there.

“Yeah that a girl Vicki, tell a vampire what to do. Should go over real well. Yeah… as if he’d listen.” Her brow furrowed in disbelief when the pocket came up empty. She searched the next one, still empty. She dug deep into both pockets, frantically searching the empty space as if the cell would just suddenly appear. “Damn it all to hell!” she grumbled her fast paced walk turned into a light run.

The cabby placed the final bag in the trunk. Closed it and made his way to the drivers side. He slid his body in the seat, slightly sucking in his belly that now touched the steering wheel. It was this moment, every time he had to squeeze himself back in the drivers seat, that he wished he was long legged and could just push the seat back a little and give his belly a little extra room but … he wasn’t. He was short and stocky and in need of loosing a few pounds. Well…more than a few pounds he thought patting his stomach with a small grin.

He adjusted himself the best he could, glanced up in the rearview mirror giving a once over to the two males occupying his back seat. Thin, tall, attractive. One paler than the other, hair auburn gold, very attractive. Must be actors or models he thought to himself. His eyes still staring at the one with the auburn waves and alluring smile.

“Nice smile.” he mumbled under his breath. The driver glanced at his semi bald head, curled back his lip and sighed at his crooked teeth, one tooth missing just off to the side. “Yeah sun shines on some - you better believe it.”

His eyes fell once again to the males in the back. The auburn haired one was starring right at him. The cabby felt strangely odd, kind of fuzzy weird as the male kept his hazel eyes locked to his.

“The sun doesn’t shine on me either, my friend, now can we please head to the airport?”

The cabby’s mouth fell slightly open, he was looking right at the guy, right at him, but the guy’s lips….they didn’t move!

“No they didn’t…” The cabby heard the voice in his head again, his eyes still locked to the auburn haired males. “If you would please…” Henry let the smile spread slowly across his lips “Drive.”

The cabby stared at him dumfounded, mindlessly turning the key, the roar of the engine breaking the drivers reverie as he nodded to Henry, broke the gaze checked for cars then pulled from the curb taking the two males to their destination.

Vicki gritted her teeth mumbling “Come on …come on” as the numbers to the floors changed . Finally a ding and the doors slid open allowing her to bolt free and run madly round the corner, almost loosing her footing as she head to Henry’s apartment.

She knocked lightly at first. No answer.

“No…” she said aloud her voice slightly panicked. She searched for the key Henry had given her, slid it in the lock, turned, the quickly pushed the door open.

“Henry?” she asked out loud. No answer, no lights, silence. “Henry? Tony?”

Again nothing. She felt along the wall for the light switch, groping blindly for a moment, then finally finding it and flicking the lights on. Her eyes immediately fell to where the suitcases had been. Gone.

“Oh shit…shit…shit.” she sighed, walking to the couch and letting her body fall into it in a defeated slump. The silence and emptiness of the room enveloped her. She could feel the tears welling but she swallowed hard fighting them down, forcing them down to sit with the knot tightening in her stomach. Slowly her eyes glanced about the room, taking in all of Henry’s things, his paintings, knick knacks, his desk, his bedroom door. Forcing herself to stand she made her way to the door, closed as it always was, she reached down, her fingers gingerly touching the knob, then turning it slowly, the door moving only a crack. She peeked in as she pushed it open farther.

Darkness…

She fumbled for a light switch once again, her fingers slowly groping along the wall. Finally, a flick and the soft light filled the room. Her eyes immediately fell onto the bed, neatly made, sheets tucked at the corners, pillows fluffed laying neatly at the head board. The tears were becoming more forceful as Henry’s cologne wafted about her filling her senses as one tear broke free and rolled gently down her cheek.

“Damn you Henry.” she whispered to the empty room.

Mike bolted upright from the sofa. He must have drifted off to sleep waiting for Vicki. He rubbed his eyes than glanced at his watch.

“Jesus Vick where the hell are you?” He stretched his arms above his head slowly and stood, arching his back more into the stretch. The pounding at the door sent his senses into full alert every muscle in his body tensing and suddenly sleep was a distant memory.

“For Christ sakes Mike would you open the door?” Again the pounding came.

“Vicki?” Mike said mixing her name with relief and confusion. Immediately he opened the door Vicki only glancing at him briefly. It was obvious to see that she was upset and that there had been some tears shed by the puffiness and red rimmed eyes even her glasses could not hide.

“So … it took you a while to get here?” Mike asked slowly closing the door. He approached her slowly not really certain where this may go, if she would break down into tears or turn around screaming at him in anger. She said nothing just stood perfectly still in the center of the room her back to him. “I must have dozed off waiting for you…” Mike said softly.

Still she did not move and Mike was beginning to feel uneasy and worried all at the same time. This wasn’t like Vicki at all, silence was not one of her better qualities and he would rather she turn and face him with her teeth bared, screaming one obscenity at him after the next, then to stand there, unmoving, and what appeared to be un - breathing.

“Vick?” He moved closer laying his hand softly on her shoulder. He could feel her tense under his touch, slowly he gave her shoulder a gentle reassuring squeeze. Vicki sighed, turning her head slightly, her lips softly separating as if she would speak but she remained silent.

“Talk to me Vick.” Mike gently encouraged. “You and I … we can still talk right?”

Vicki nodded. Her voice frail “Yes.”

“We can work this all out Vick, I know we can. You and I and…”

Vicki smiled shaking her head. “Henry?”

“Yeah…” Mike said trying to cover up his uncertainty and force the image of Henry’s hazel eyes and electric touch from his mind. “Yeah.”

Vicki let a small delicate laugh escape, reaching up and patting his hand. “Henry is gone Mike. Just like he said he would do…”

“Well I knew that.”

“You knew that? I didn’t think he would go…I really didn’t but I was just there and the place is empty, the suitcases gone and….damnit.” Vicki’s body began to tremble. Swiftly Mike wrapped his arms around her, his mind reeling with pain, confusion and longing. Vicki did not object as she turned into him, burying her face into his shirt, the tears she fought so hard to hold back now flowed freely from her eyes. Mike rocked her, laying his cheek on her head, his fingers delicately stroking her back. Vicki swayed into the sensation, her arms sliding around his waist.

The feeling of Mikes arms comforted her, warm and familiar and it was just what she needed at the moment. Mike her safe haven always there to catch her before she fell . His fingers sent tiny warm tingles up her back, his soft thudding heart a serene tempo accompanied by the tender rhythm of his breath she could lull asleep to, like she use to, and wake up feeling everything in her world was alright. God she had missed this, this comfort between them. Vicki tightened her embrace around him feeling the subtle warmth of his lips as they lightly kissed her forehead. Slowly Vicki raised her head from his chest, sliding her hands up Mikes back, she had not forgotten the muscular terrain of his back and how it sent chills through her, beginning at her fingertips, running throughout her body and ending at her toes. Tenderly he gazed down at her and it was not long before she found the silken heat of his lips.
