A chill filled the room and the sudden silence gripped Henry like a vice. He sat down on the divan, leaning forward onto his elbows, his fingers running through his hair brushing it back from his forehead. What had he done? This whole entire situation had become one giant mess. Never had he intended to become so close or allow anyone so close to him.

Why did he break his own rules? He knew better but…

“Mike…” he whispered. So unexpected this sudden attraction Mike had for him and now he in return had for Mike. Man did it come out of left field and hit him square between the eyes. You’re damn right it did.

For weeks - months, Henry had tolerated Mikes sarcastic remarks, shrugging them off as school boy jealousy. For a while it actually amused him to see what new off the cuff remark Mike could grumble at him in passing. Mike Celluci -the old dog desperately trying to show his dominance over what was once- what Mike considered - his territory. But that was all different now. It certainly was.

Henry could often smell the arousal Mike felt whenever he and Mike were near one another. At first, it was subtle, so he had just shrugged it off, believing that Mike would never be one to act on those emotions and curiosities, after all, attraction to him being what he was, a vampire, was generally part of the package. But Henry knew he had no preternatural hand in anything that could be going on with Mike. The feelings Mike was having for him and deciding to act upon those feelings was Mikes decision and Mikes alone. Henry had no hand in it, none what so ever. Although it was true that the night Mike had appeared at his door with something on his mind other than the typical how to get rid of Vicki’s new found friend, the vampire, Henry had let his own desires, physical and otherwise get the better of him, that was true - yes. Could he have stopped it?

Yes and no.

What mortals did not know was that once the blood desire is awakened and blends with sexual desire mixing with already built up tension, which Mike and he both had for one another over Vicki, it is very difficult to control, much less stop, and the release can be well …

Henry grumbled, silently scolding himself for the mistakes he made. For what Henry had thought was just a curious desire, a fantasy, a one night fling had turned into more nights for the two of them and…Henry sighed heavily. He should have stopped it - he should not have let it happen at all but he had been caught off guard and caught in the moment, just as he believed Mike had been also and, Henry felt just as much to blame - if not more so, but Henry also knew that whole time, even during their interludes, neither he nor Mike ever forgot or relinquished their feelings for Vicki.

Vicki. Beautiful, blonde, strong willed, independent Vicki. There had not been a woman who had completely turned his head since…. Henry would not even let a shadow of her name fall upon his lips. Quickly he shoved away the memory that had forced itself into his head.

“Vicki.” he sighed a slight smile turning at the corner of his lips. Vicki Nelson - fighting demons, solving the supernatural mysteries that just seemed to innocently find their way to her. These cases - one dealing with a certain demon in particular that would be a constant problem - had locked them together. Henry had thought that becoming Vicki’s silent partner would be the best way to keep an eye on her, the best way to keep her safe from the dark powers she seemed to run headlong into, no matter the cost, no matter the price, she would always do the right thing. He couldn’t deny it - he knew how she felt, her desire for him was so apparent and her touch, the way she felt in his arms, the scent of her skin and hair. He had asked her, more than once and she always chose….

“But they have a past - a history together.” he whispered to himself.

Vicki and Mike both had a relationship long before he was ever in the picture, they had been partners, best friends, lovers. Yes lovers, and the romantic part had supposedly ended but from what Henry could see and feel - no matter what either of them felt for him - they both still had some feelings for each other. Vicki she was capable of holding out, keeping her feelings hidden from ….mortal view but Henry knew differently. She wanted him but she needed Mike, she couldn’t hurt Mike, she couldn’t leave Mike, she couldn’t loose Mike and Henry now wondered if Mike felt the exact same way about Vicki. With Mike it was obvious, painfully obvious, he was torn and upset, hiding those emotions for her , playing the tough guy, and now, hiding his double life with Henry were proving too much for Mike and soon he would wear them on his sleeve for all to see and …what would happen then?

Every ones world would crash and burn.

Henry shook his head “No!” he said forcefully out loud. He couldn’t allow this. This could not be his decision. They would have to choose - not him. And even that would be unfair and unjust. What right did he have to intervene, to force anyone’s hand for him or to hand either of them an ultimatum,? He, after all, was not meant to be a part of their fate. Could he even believe in fate, did he, of all creatures, have that right?

Henry stood sighing, sliding his hands in his back pockets as he walked to the huge window that over looked the city. This city had become home. He knew it well, knew every street, every club, sometimes he could even hear each individual heart beat. Yes, this place had become home. Millions of people going on about their business, living their lives having no idea what so ever that anything such as a vampire existed beyond a fairy tale, beyond fiction. The lights in each building twinkled like diamonds against the ebony back drop of the night, the only way he would ever see it - at night, so beautiful. Henry imagined each window and whom may live inside, how their lives could be. The hour was getting late, most were probably settling down for bed, doing their usual routine, snuggling with their pillow or with the one they loved, sleeping away the rest of the evening, straight through the early morning hours, rising to the beep of the digital alarm. The same as Mike and Vicki would soon be doing. Rising to greet and exist in the day.

“Will you give me your nights?” he said soft in a hushed voice leaning forward his forehead touching the cool glass. In a way she had and so had Mike.

Henry closed his eyes Mike and Vicki’s faces so vivid in his mind

There was only one thing he could do, he could see no other way.

confrontation, blood ties
