he died for sins the show has so far not been willing to execute its leaders for and With the Old Man and the President on the same side, reversals of authority can only be temporary are the biggest things that bother me about the show, and that's saying a lot. I'm saving most of my reaction until I see how they play out the aftermath, but I am *pissed* that they do this time and time again but never really problematize it.

I read spoiler posts for Gaeta's death and am glad I did if only because I would have been crying so hard if I hadn't known it was coming.

I am intrigued to see how the aftermath goes, too. At least I trust them not to entirely sweep it under the carpet. But, yeah, I'm with you.

I thought they worked far too hard to show us that the mutiny was wrong and Adama right, that his military command and dictatorial politics ought too be considered ethically correct.

YES. THIS. I feel like the show is backsliding in so many ways for the sake of the ever-insidious "closure"

With the Old Man and the President on the same side, reversals of authority can only be temporary.

Especially when that side is HETEROSEXUAL ROMANCE.

Ugh, I was hoping we'd get a little more Cylon Runner and a little less Sausage Fest this week.

p.s. I haven't actually watched it yet!

So not a satisfactory amount of Cylon Runner! Some moments though, some moments...

I was also bugged by the way Roslin's anxiety was all framed around Bill without being related to, you know, the FATE OF THE WHOLE HUMAN RACE. I mean, as Becka says in her reaction post, it's possible to read it that way. It's just strongly pointed in the direction of ICKY DICTATORIAL ROMANCE.

I read your post after I posted mine and was going to comment saying more or less "Intriguing". :) I like your reading of the mutiny better than mine in a lot of ways and I hope that the show proves you right, but I feel like the things they did to show the ill-advisedness of the mutiny far outweighed the efforts they made to make it complex. Though the final conversation between Gaeta and Gaius was something I liked.

I think, re: Roslin, that your take on her motivations being presented as largely romantic is right. There was so much space for her to talk about the fleet, to take up the position she's held throughout as spokesperson for a democratic humanity even as she was carrying out unconscionable actions in their name. Instead, we saw emotions that I think we were intended read as much more *personally* driven.

See, I think of Zarek as very similar to Blagojevich, who was my governor until last week: someone who professed belief in lofty ideals and maybe did believe them, but was ultimately out for power by any means necessary, no matter what laws and moral obligations he had to break.

That's the way they want to present him; but I just don't see that as fitting with someone who went to prison for his ideals. He was obviously willing to put something ahead of power then. I just think they've messed around his characterisation--and that they never did justice to what that character could have been.

Yeah, I'm with you on Zarek. I thought he was a far more interesting character earlier in the series. If his experience on New Caprica was supposed to have changed him, I would have liked to have seen more of that.

I liked the Gaeta/Baltar bonding at the end though. And Gaeta's exit. I would have been annoyed if they had manufactured a reason to keep him alive.

I thought the end was very well done. I loved Gaeta fiercely in his last scenes, and it made me cry. Like I said in my post, I just think there are some unfortunate patterns to who BSG kills off and who it saves, that don't seem to have all that much to do with people's actions. (After all, Gaius is still alive...)

I hope beccatoria is right and we get to explore some of the problems with those contradictions in the aftermath episodes.
