Evasion

Here I sit, wandering around the Web, trying hard to procrastinate on my Immigration final.  And interestingly, the topic of Immigration seems to be coming up a fair amount lately.  There have been some interesting posts on LJ lately on the subject.  One is this serious jerk online (I suspect it's a front for someone who has been very wounded in the past) and another is by some Italian dude claiming that Italy is much more prosperous than the US and therefore has a worse immigration problem.

I offered to help the jerk.  He is roundly ridiculed and regularly flamed for his very ignorant and incendiary comments.  I can only assume that he acts that way because his self image is so low that he feels that any attention he receives is better than no attention.  So I've asked myself why I think it's a good idea to help him.  Part of it is pity.  Another part is the interesting immigration situation that he's trying to solve which = brain candy for yours truly.  We'll see if he even wants my help, which he is probably too proud to ask for.

The Italian is another matter.  My understanding is that Italy is not more prosperous than the US.  However, it does have a bad immigration problem.  I agree that theirs seems like a worse problem, however, since instead of getting a bunch of salt-of-the-Earth Mexicans who just want to come here, work hard, and make a better life for their children, Italy is burdened with a bunch of Muslim immigrants who want to go there and sometimes have the same goals as Mexican immigrants here, but instead usually have Imams preaching to them that being on the public dole is noble because it is the equivalent of receiving tribute from the Infidels.  Our immigrants are usually much better quality than theirs, thus their problem is worse.  I don't think it actually has much to do with prosperity at all.

Oriana Fallaci has written several books on the topic, the most interesting of which is The Rage and The Pride.  She was hauled into court for (essentially) not being politically correct enough, but then she died during the pendency of the case against her.  She was yet another bone-crushingly brave woman, and a loss to humanity when she passed.
