Because I know everyone gives an enormous crap about my school experiences, here's a lovely semi-lengthy update. I've attended all but one of my classes now... my initial prediction still stands. This semester rocks.
Before my first class this morning, I ran into one of my favorite professors of all time, the guy who taught my Evidence course last semester. That dude had surgery last fall, so it was good to see him up and about and apparently healthy. I told him what a great class I thought he taught, and he seemed a little touched. I wonder how often people actually tell their good profs that they enjoyed a class. I figured it couldn't do any harm since final grades are already posted.
Wednesday mornings I have Legal Databases. This is a brand new class taught by one of the reference librarians, and I walked out of that first class with a ton of new information on free sites to check for information. This class focuses on other methods of obtaining legal research besides going the hugely expensive Lexis or Westlaw route. I'm really looking forward to finding out what all is out there. My favorite site so far is pipl.com. That site finds all kinds of scary information from the deep web about pretty much anyone in the US.
Friday is my first Asylum class and instead of having class we get to go down to Judge Cordova's courtroom down at the Immigration Court and watch an asylum hearing for three and a half hours. I love going down there because it's neat to see the law being administered - it's eye opening to see the concepts we've studied be applied. I hate going down there because 1) getting through security at the Federal courthouse is worse than the airport and 2) Judge Cordova's courtroom is windowless, airless, and cramped.
On the plus side, my friend Jon appears to be in the class, so at least I'll have someone to pass notes with. It's also fun to watch the interpreters work in real time because they're so good at what they do.
On Monday and Wednesday nights I do my Spanish class. The class itself is relatively dry, but the prof is a great person and we have very interesting coversations after class. The prof is someone I could totally be good friends with if the circumstances arose. As it stands now, I don't think it's too ethical to be too friendly with the prof. After final grades are administered is another story.
My mom has been staying with us this week and I really like having her around. I wish she'd come more often. She's a good time.
