Hey, guys - it's been a while, I know, and it's completely unlike me to use Livejournal as a way to promote my own blogging (I mean, what would be the point?). But something really important, potentially really big, is going on, and I figure some of you will want to check it out, and maybe a couple of you lovelies will even want to join in.
April is National Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, and while I'm not sure 'celebrating' is the right word to use, there is an easy, potentially entertaining/educating/illuminating way to commemorate it. Most of you already know about RAINN (www.rainn.org); for those who don't, it's the most kickass organization around. The good folks there work to prevent sexual abuse through educational efforts (from posting spring-break precautions to informing the media and policy-makers about sex crime statistics), and also to provide support to those of us who have been affected by sexual abuse, whether directly or indirectly. Chances are, if you haven't been raped yourself, you've got a sister or a girlfriend or a mother or a coworker who has - probably more than you even know of. Sexual violence is so prevalent, and can cause so much damage, that we're all saddled with its effects. It's become a problem for our entire society, and it's not one that seems to be going away.
Because it's such a huge issue, most people feel completely powerless to do anything about it. But this month, author Carly Milne has teamed up with RAINN to launch the GBBMC2008 (
http://kapgar.typepad.com/my_weblog/gbbmc2008.html), where pedestrians, internet celebrities, and first-timers are all invited to blog about sexuality in any way they see fit. The only real stipulation is that we've got to attach a link to RAINN'S donation page to every entry, so that anyone who's moved to donate will have an easy time doing so.
Because I'm thisclose to graduating and cannot deal with all the endings coming my way, I've really thrown myself into this blogging project. My sex blog can be found at lowmindedlover.blogspot.com, and I'm planning to post daily. I need to write about my experience with rape, because it's not something I can go on keeping quiet, but those entries that speak at length about rape will be clearly marked so that no one stumbles across anything triggering. More than that, though, I want to write about how joyous, mortifying, thrilling, memorable, and life-affirming sex can be; I want to remind myself of my own potential. And I want to get people talking, and possibly even donating, because it's such an important topic, and such a fantastic cause.
So please, if you have a minute, click on over to lowmindedlover.blogspot.com, where you can sift through my musings AND find all the details about this project and the cause it benefits. Thank you, and take care of yourselves and those around you, all right?
So much love,
Jen.
