Watched 'The Colour Purple' today in class.
Gosh, when is Oprah NOT awesome?
This morning our school was subjected to a crime stoppers assembly on empowered student partnerships and such. I'm not going to go into a lengthly rant, but let's just say it was HIGHLY controversial:
1. The speakers treated us like morons
-Dropped big names to sound 'hip'
-Showed a movie of three middle-aged men being crime stoppers 'angels' which was a pathetic attempt at humour
-Played 'super cool youngster music' like Clay Aiken and Black Eyed Peas
2. Promoted violence in stopping 'the bad guys'
-Showed clips of cops shooting up places
-Had a graphic of some guy shooting at us (the audience)
-Glorified the cops with photos from SWAT (the movie) and other 'glamorous' police cliches
3. Enforced a very one sided gang stereotype
-Showed pictures of groups of big black guys
-Showed Snoop Dogg and gangsta rap CDs
Honestly there was more but I'm not going to get into it. the guy was up there like an idiot making sound effects and telling us lame stories like you would for 10 or 12 year olds. I think this would fly at other schools, maybe. But there were some serious issues. Miranda thinks we're overreacting, but I was insulted.
On a lighter note I found this wonderful little store downtown with Miranda, Lee, Eve, and Jenny. Me and the girl working there chatted about sewing and stuff and she said I could come over on Fridays to the store and make things with her in the back, as she's usually all alone. Maybe she could sell things I made! Oh man, that's so great. She's where I want to be in five years. Studying costumes and design and selling creations. Niiice.
