Cas really wanted to be there. He'd had dinner all ready, even if it was just something he knew would more or less catch Dean by surprise. Him...going to get his favorite burgers from a place he hadn't visited since he was a child. But work was work. And he wanted to insure that Dean would never have to deal with Lucifer again. But even so it didn't make up for the stuff he was going through right now. Abandoning Dean would only make the hunter that more angry at him for not showing up with dinner. He hadn't even realized it was one month since they'd started...whatever they'd started between the both of them. He just knew that he hadn't left Dean's side for so long that it felt normal again. At least normal for him.
In heaven, he still felt as though an outcast even if he WAS Michael's replacement. He still felt as if the work he did wasn't comparable to the work he could do if he was given the chance. The archangel was doing his work now. Not God's. Dean had been right when it came to him either going back to being a drone or remaining on Earth and...feeling. He didn't know what he was feeling now, but he was regretting this. He was hating this.
He'd passed out from the pain, when he'd awoken the same thing repeated. Even if he was an archangel, his body had to be prepared...apparently. Gallons of demon blood just as Sam Winchester had done before he ran off to become Lucifer's suit as he tried to spit out the remeants of the last few splashes that had gotten past his chapped lips. This time he hadn't passed out as much as rolling over onto his stomach and pressing his forehead against the cold floor as the cult seemed to go off into other directions, preparing for their 'master's' arrival.
Dean had to do the usual asking around thing but without the preparation. He stole a fake cop ID out of his glove box, took a peak at the name and went to the first gas station in town for direction. From there it was the hospital where he maintained that he was undercover because he was in one of his flannels and a pair of jeans.
He got enough information to go trolling around abandoned churches. He'd tried a few to no avail until his radio came on at a whim as he rounded a corner at the bottom of a hill and the EMT in the passengers seat started to slowly whistle.
Dean raised his head toward the church, noticing first the flickering from the fire inside and then a child or two standing guard outside. He left the impala along the fence line and grabbed his gun from the center console. Choosing to make a soldier approach instead of mowing through head stones.
The first kid was easy to take down, he pistol whipped the auburn haired brat from behind, but that alerted the other who screamed. He had to cover her mouth and shove her head into the wood that raised the church. He let her roll down. He knew the people inside were aware, so he kept his gun aimed after shooting open the lock.
Helpless...was not an expression the archangel wore often. Or well for that matter. But he did wear it now. His head had shot up when he heard one of the guard's scream out before it was silenced. But it was enough. Just enough for them to try and rush through the ceremony, handing out a small cup to all the teenagers who stood circled around the flames that only threatened to grow higher when the shot rang throughout the church. Some of them hesitated at first as the 'leader' as Castiel assumed rose his cup and took it down like a shot before the others followed suit. All that Castiel could do was scream out no as he slowly rose to his feet and tried to rush at them. Warn them.
That they would suffer for an eternity.
While he would suffer now. It was more like...the time when Lucifer was first released that alerted Castiel that he was definitely in the wrong place at the wrong time as light filled the room. It wasn't quite like an atomic bomb landing as much as it was another release of energy. After all, it'd been rushed through thanks to the conquering hero. Cas was sure he caught a glimpse of Dean right before a light forced itself into him before he toppled over, still surrounded by the flames that kept him contained in one place. He knew it was bad news the moment the light died down, but he didn't want to accept it as he remained on his hands in knees in front of the inverted cross.
Dean knew that light, he'd seen it before. He didn't want to jump to conclusions but he also knew what a fucking satanic ritual looked like.
Angry, more than anything, he cocked his gun to make a point and emptied a round just past the group of teenagers. He wanted to shoot them, but he couldn't bring himself to, they were stupid and probably had no idea what they were getting themselves into.
"You all are stupid as shit," he spat. "Those of you interested in living go join your two unconscious buddies out on the stoop."
Dean turned to Cas, his gun still aimed. "Cas?" He paused to release the breath he'd been holding. "You okay?"
He caught one of the kids moving in his peripheral and shouted while facing the arch angel. "ARE YOU DEAF?! I said get the hell outta here!"
Castiel gasped slightly for air as the kids jumped when the gun was fired. The archangel hardly making a move as the warning the hunter had given off had all but sent them running for the hills. Most of them at least. The leader had yet to move, his eyes still on the prize of finally getting what he deserved as Cas expected. The kid was probably bullied mercilessly in school which led to this. But even then it couldn't be forgiven as he finally glanced up at Dean with a weary look on his face. Blood on his chin that he'd yet to clean off and yet to...honestly give a damn about for the most part.
"You came..." He croaked out, looking forward at the hunter who seemed about ready to jump on the next person who got too close to the archangel. He wasn't exactly surprised that he hadn't shot any of them anyway. The children probably didn't know what they were getting into in the first place.
Dean just glared at the older boy, he was lanky and he had stringy hair. He didn't seem the type to do much but sit in his room and plot this shit. He looked like he hadn't showered in about a month.
Dean kept the gun tight in his fist as he eased his way toward the ring of fire with every means to grab his friend away from it. He gave the adolescent an, "I dare you," look as his free hand grabbed a fistful of Castiel's trench coat.
Cas knew it was at least a little safe when Dean grabbed a fistful of his coat. He hadn't done anything to deter him from the fact that when Dean came to the rescue -- he came to the rescue even if he was doing everything he could to rescue Dean from himself. Castiel did what was in his nature to do at that point as it was in many peoples natures. He clung. His arms looped around Dean's waist as he tried to not just toss whatever holy anger he had at the boy who looked absolutely wrecked that it hadn't worked as he thought it would.
Dean picked the angel up, and toted all one hundred and ninety pounds of him back outside so that he could put him in the passengers side. He wreaked, he smelled like the blood and his own sweat and tears, Dean felt awful. He'd said no to this job and Cas had gone on his own then THIS happened.
Dean reached down and buckled the angel up, "You'll be okay, Cas."
Castiel's head had lulled to the side by the time Dean was carrying him out before he was set back into the Impala. He didn't blame his friend for what happened. He blamed himself and the less than admirable mentality that he didn't want to harm a little girl. He smiled a little, teeth stained pink before rolling his head to the side. "I know," he just had a kick to the confidence about his strength.
Dean lit up the impala and made his way toward the state line. He couldn't risk anyone catching up, when they got far enough away he'd book them a hotel, but until then he had to deal with driving on almost no sleep at all.
He was quiet for the most part, he didn't have a lot to say to Cas, he didn't think that there was much he COULD say.
Castiel, for the most part, would have chided him for not at least resting. But he'd passed out before he could really say anything. His body fighting a quiet battle against more of a foreign creature then anything else. It wasn't ideal for the most part. Demonic blood was bad enough. But this was even worse. Cas would tell Dean but there was a fear that...well, it'd just make the hunter's life worse as he tossed and turned in his sleep. For the most part, his dreams were of what Lucifer wanted him to see. Hell. The version of Hell the former angel was familiar with that was used to punish those who rebelled against Heaven.
When they got into Dover, Kentucky Dean pulled into the first motel he could find and left Cas in the car to pay for a stay at the room. When he came back he opened the passengers side door and shook him awake. "Cas... we're here."
When his eyes did open, they were filled with fear. First not recongizing the man that was looming over him to the point where he almost screamed before catching himself and lookinjg on at Dean. His heart thumping quickly in his chest before he twisted his grip in Dean's jacket, tightly like if he didn't let go something bad would happen to him before slowly releasing the hunter and disappearing from sight. Reappearing right behind him with an exhausated look on his face.
"Where's here?" He tilted his head to the side, looking around the parking lot that seemed vacant enough for the most part.
Dean shut the door and locked the impala up before walking around to the back to grab his overnight bag from the trunk. "We're in Kentucky," he replied. "I tried to get us far enough north that those dicks in Florida wouldn't be able to find us."
Castiel, uncharacteristically, dragged his feet as he followed after Dean. Nearly crowding him but not too much to seem so. His body felt heavier than usual. He didn't need Dean to know that but he didn't feel...right. He was sure the hunter would catch on sooner or later. He'd seen the light. He knew what it meant and what might be happening -- it was almost a surprise to him that Dean hadn't just tied him up and waited to see if his fears were true.
"Well...they were children. I highly doubt they even knew what they were dealing with." He noted quickly as his body shuddered. Knowingly trying to regret what had been forced onto him. The archangel sighed softly, glancing around. "Dean..." He didn't want to say it aloud. But he honestly just wanted to lay down and sleep.
Dean's jaw tightened and the only movement he made was flinging the bag over his shoulder by its strap.
"Just, shut up," he said his voice thick, guttural, the same tone he'd used with Sam so many times before.
"Get in the damn motel room."
Dean wasn't sure why he didn't just molotov him right now, search him for the knife and kill him. He couldn't reason with himself, he was too angry. Angry at Cas for being the idiot that chased the goose without him and angry at himself for getting there too late.
Normally he wouldn't care, several months ago when Sam was around he wouldn't care. He couldn't rationalize what was happening to him. Yeah, he and Cas had fucked- yeah, a part of him was still ashamed, but he'd liked it. Liked it more than most of the other women he'd been with and after the time they spent just ... being seemingly normal...
He couldn't have feelings for him, no.
Dean turned back to Cas, validating his point just to be an ass, "Did I stutter? GO."
