As I said, I'm bad at reviewing anything, so this isn't one ;-)
VotD had all the right ingredients for Christmas special to fit the holiday spirit. If you like Christmas movies, then you probably won't mind.
I'm not so sure if the mix worked for me. Def too much emotional display for my taste and that Superman-ish-flying bit was just tacky, IMHO. And somehow blashphemous (the whole thing, I mean), but maybe that's just me. I think it started out way better than it finished. Way too sentimental at the end. Plotwise it was fine story telling only how the captain of the ship figured into the whole scheme, I'm not sure. I'll need to rewatch to tell if it actually made sense. But otherwise, no complaints.
But I think my main complaint is the heap of heroics involved. It was like everyone was a John Sheppard. Seriously. As somebody or other once said: Let me know when the heroics are going to start. I'd like to be prepared..
It sounds like I didn't enjoy it, but I did. I could have done without the drawn out ending. Or quite this much 'sugar'. But it was fine story-telling with (mostly) the right ingredients (for a Christmas movie anyways). But it felt like a Christmas movie with the Doctor in it. And sci-fi of course ;-) I really like the three-questions concept and the Doctor always trying to babble his way out of a jam.
I hope I survive the relatives tomorrow.
