oOo

She had bought Rose a red top. Just the same as the one that had unravelled in the washing machine, the one she had been telling Rose about in their last phone call. The last phone call before Rose had disappeared.

Jackie had wrapped the presents, the top and a thin silver bracelet, the evening before, but she hadn’t been able to bear laying them into Rose’s room just yet. The two parcels, one red, one blue, were sitting on the kitchen table, untouched, with only six hours to go until Rose’s birthday had passed - without Rose.

Her Rose would be twenty years old today. She was turning twenty and somewhere Rose was celebrating her birthday right now.

Jackie sighed and rearranged to photographs, all of them of Rose, on the coffee table.

The phone rang. Faint hope surged through her, but she had hoped so many times in the past four months that this time, it would be Rose on the phone or at the door. It never was.

It wasn’t Rose this time either, it was Detective Miller, from the missing persons’ squad.

“Sorry to disturb you this late, Mrs Tyler. The thing is, we have found a body.” The woman’s voice was calm and friendly, but Jackie knew that this wasn’t a curtsey call. The police had found a body and they had reason to believe that it was Rose.

“Rose?” Jackie could only whisper as she was flooded with dread and images of Rose - Rose buried in a cold, dark place, all alone, and far from home.

“There is no way to be sure. Not at this stage. There are certain physical characteristics that match with those of your daughter, but it really is too early too be alarmed.”

“Should I come in tonight then?” Jackie needed to know. She had spent so many nights lying awake and imaging one grizzly scenario after another. Now that there was a chance that she could finally have certainty, even if it meant that Rose was dead, Jackie couldn’t bear to wait another day.

“If that’s all right for you, we’d appreciate that.”

Jackie hung up, feeling cold suddenly. She almost longed for the numbness to return for the combination of hope and dread filled her eyes with tears.
