I'm back to nannying my 13 year old niece twice a week for about 3 hours a night. I was wondering if you had suggestions for good ideas on how to make the most of the time for the both of us. She's currently a fairly normal 13 year old in that all she wants to do is eat and watch TV, although I can lure her into hesitantly doing other stuff if I  ( Read more... )

Learn how to knit? I suspect you may like many of the structural aspects of knitting, although I have no idea what you'll think of its efficiency.

What projects would you usually be doing during that time? If it were me, I would probably try to do something that needs doing, anything from "I'll wash, you dry," to swapping out a HDD to changing the oil in the car or cooking a new recipe (give her a couple options, like "My friends gave me these three new recipes today, which one do you think sounds best? ok, will you chop the onions while I skin the cat?" so you're giving her a chance for input but not leaving yourself quite as wide open to "i dunno.") and then settle in for an episode of Bones after. When she gets used to the routine, start weaning her onto other shows.

But in general, ask for her help as you're doing a wide variety of things to see what piques her interest (niece.txt), and follow a brief period of that with some vegging. She is a teenager, it's hard work building all those new wrinkles into her brain, after all.

Has she seen your backpack yet? Have you asked her what she thinks of it? Asking her opinion on things probably isn't a bad idea, as long as you ask her kind of offhand and not like "HOW WAS SCHOOL TODAY?"

I ask her opinions on everything and try to give them at least a little respect. I have showed her my kraken, used her to test the size, and have been asking her opinions on various aspects. She is still young enough that her opinions tend to be stuff like "You should make if fuzzy and cute." And when asked if she would buy one and for how much, she replied something like "yes... maybe eight dollars?"
