*sits cross-legged on Augustus' sofa and looks through the picture, a cup of tea hovering in the air beside him* *when he comes to this polaroid, he snorts in a rather undignified way and then laughs himself silly over the picture* *still interspersed with laughter* I trust that was the last time you enlarged anything by quite so large a factor?
*is sitting on the floor, leaning back against the sofa, and at the sound of Gideon's laughter his own lips twitch, and he chuckles almost silently* *leans his head back to look up at Gideon, affecting a non-plussed sort of expression, though it's upside down for Gideon* You've reached the one with the preying mantis, hm?
*grins* Sadly, rather the opposite was true. I persisted. Anything else would have been admitting defeat.
*gradually calms down, looking at the picture more closely, while his other hand is playing with Augustus' hair without him taking notice of it* Yes, that looks like a praying mantis alright. What did you do to get rid of it, a well aimed reducto?
*laughs out, though quietly* Is this then something where it would've been wiser to admit defeat, if you want to call it that?
*unexpectedly likes having his hair played with, even if he does reach up compulsively every now and again to neaten it* *huffs* That would have been rather messy. That particular specimen was rendered harmless by my tutor and a quick Reducio. *dryly* Though that was after he'd stopped to take the picture, as you can tell.
*primly* Certainly not. I became particularly adept at engorgio and reducio spells as a result, not to mention a few other useful tricks.
*combs his fingers through his hair and buries them in it, smiling slightly when he notices what he's doing* *grins* Did he laugh himself silly as well? It's a rather entertaining image as images go, you know.
*teasingly* I seem to remember you mentioning that there was a dictionary that came in handy during one of your more adventurous engorgements. Was that pre- or post-mantis?
Mm. *shuts his eyes and leans his head back a little, so that the back of his neck is resting against Gideon's leg* *huffs* He did seem to be overcome by a coughing fit moments later, coincidentally. *grins* I rather liked it, too. My mother threatened to have it framed, and I don't think I ran away from another one.
That was a couple of weeks afterwards, in the garden. Some sort of beetle, though I can't remember which sort precisely. *tips his head back further to look up at him* Such a same no photographic evidence remains of that one, hm?
*huffs at the way Augustus is positively letting himself be petted, but wouldn't dream of stopping his movements* *very amused* Ah, yes, I can imagine. *looks at the picture again, then puts it aside, taking up another one* Mhm, that must've been the threat to work wonders. What was her initial reaction when she saw the picture?
*meets his gaze when Augustus looks up and strokes the back of his fingers over his cheek before brushing his hair back from his face* *with a small smirk* Rather, yes. You could've started a collection of early experiments getting a bit out of hand that way.
*hasn't really noticed how he's being petted, so is very much enjoying it in an unconscious way* *huffs* Very similar to yours, as a matter of fact. *purses his lips crossly, but then lets his smile show through just a little* She took great pleasure in telling father about it that evening at dinner.
*rights his head again, and picks up the pile of photos that Gideon's already looked through; flicks through them slowly, face expressionless* After that... I don't think there were any that would have added to that collection. I got too good at Petrificus and Stupefy, that sort of thing. *smiles faintly; teasingly* Sorry to disappoint you.
*finds that rather amusing for some reason* Well, it seems that knowing you well enough results in laughter over this photo, then. It's both very you, and yet very unlike you, if that makes sense. *curious* What did your father say on the matter?
*is currently looking at a picture of Augustus' mother, sitting in an armchair reading and looking very self-contained somehow; doesn't say anything about it, but looks at it a moment longer, seeing Augustus in her face almost right away* I'll manage. *goes on to the next photo; rather out of the blue* Did you mother read to you a lot when you were little?
*grins* He called me a damn menace and said I wasn't to do it in the house again. I think he found it all rather amusing as well, but he taught me a few spells I might find handy that evening himself. *remembers that clearly as one of the few evenings his father had taught him like that himself*
*raises his eyebrows slightly at the suddenness of the quiestion, but answers easily enough* When I was young, yes. When I could read for myself I preferred to do that, though. *thinks now that his mother had quite missed reading to him, but wouldn't have any of it at the time, of course* When she was ill, she sometimes asked me to read from the books on biochemistry and herbology I had at the time.
*huffs, his fingers curling a little into Augustus' hair* A sensible order, as orders go, I'd say. Imagine you have to nip to the loo in the dead of night and get attacked by an oversized bug on the way. *finds that rather interesting and can imagine how well Augustus took to it* Did you find him a good teacher?
*had also enjoyed getting read to, but had had a fairly similar take on the matter once he could read for himself, although it was quite a different matter between him and Fabian* From your books? Did she take an interest in that, too?
*blinks slowly and stretches his legs out in front of him towards the fire, crossing his ankles* *affecting offense* I did shrink most of them before getting bored, you know, Prewett. *chuckles quietly* He was excellent, but I got the feeling if I hadn't been as good a student as he was a teacher, his patience wouldn't have lasted overly long.
Not at all. I don't think she knew what I was on about most of the time. *smiles, a onesided, humourless - but not bitter - sort of smile that's hidden by the angle of his head*
*grins, teases* Well, yes. After having your photo taken while bolting and then fending off something with too many legs with a dictionary, I would have expected there to be a learning effect. You were never particularly slow on the uptake. *that sounds very much like what he expected, thinks that Alexander probably appreciated it rather to have such an intelligent child on his hands* Did he teach you after that on occasion?
*evenly* I see. *can't see his smile, of course, but holds his hand still where it's lying against the side of Augustus' neck*
*when he comes to this polaroid, he snorts in a rather undignified way and then laughs himself silly over the picture*
*still interspersed with laughter* I trust that was the last time you enlarged anything by quite so large a factor?
I hope the setup is alright with you? :)
