Name: James Potter
Date: early 1978, presumably around late February or early March
Format: Letter
Relevance: The relevance of the letter, besides the demonstration of interaction between James Potter and various members of the Black family, is not immediately apparent. However, it is loosely bundled into a small folder with a few other items and considered in connection with these, it provides an essential piece of information.
Reg,
I've just had a bit of a run-in with your cousin, Bellatrix. Before you get alarmed, we're both fine, well, I'm fine and she's still mad as a very mad hatter. She was actually reasonably decent, aside from being quite obviously in need of therapy.
Look, this is awkward, you haven't mentioned to her anything about back at Hog She turned up at my flat, and starting asking me about Sirius and you. I tried explaining that Sirius was perfectly able to look after himself, and that you and I just go out for a drink now and then, it's not like you ever tell me anything, but she didn't seem to believe me.
Frankly, I had a bit of trouble getting her out of my flat once she was in. Having to manhandle a woman who really doesn't like you very much out of your bedroom when you've been on shift at St Mungo's for the past ten hours really is not fun. And don't ask how she ended up in my bedroom, I sure as hell didn't invite her in.
The reason I'm writing though, aside from the hope that you'll explain to your cousin that she really doesn't need to be hassling me about you, is that, in the most sensitive and tactful way I can put this, she needs treatment.
Don't fly off the handle. Don't sulk and pout, just think about it. Your cousin is not a well woman. I've heard all the stories of the Black madness, and I refuse to believe that sensible people are just going to sit around and let a woman go on like this, when she's a risk to both herself and others, all because they've gotten used to the fact their family breeds nutcases. No offence intended.
Just think about it. And for God's sake, explain to her that I am a thoroughly decent bloke who doesn't have it in for the Ancient and Noble House of Black.
James.
