Relevance: Evidence of abuse in Azkaban.

Dear Mr Crouch,

I am writing to you in my capacity as Senior Healer at Azkaban, but would request that this matter remain confidential. I am concerned about the potential mistreatment of some of Azkaban’s prisoners. The situation at present is acceptable, but if strict measures are not introduced to curb the behaviour of the guards, I am worried that those prisoners of Azkaban who do not have a life-sentence will end up selling their stories to The Daily Prophet and dragging the name of the prison through the mud again.

We are an establishment of both punishment and rehabilitation. I have found evidence of abuse of those prisoners that are beyond redemption, and wish to alert you to it before those prisoners for whom there is still hope become victims.

Last week, prior to questioning by Aurors regarding the location of some as yet unfound bodies, Bellatrix Lestrange was examined by me; there are a number of infectious diseases running rife in the prison among our long-term prisoners and we do not wish to expose any of our visitors to the threat. She was in reasonable health, but standard tests revealed that she was two months pregnant. She was apparently unaware of this fact and I saw no reason to enlighten her. The woman has proved herself unfit to be a mother, and she would only use it to barter for better living conditions - quite contrary to what she deserves.

The fact of her pregnancy is not an issue; I terminated it by administering a dose of pennyroyal. However, as she has not been in the company of her husband, or indeed any of her fellow inmates, since her incarceration, I can only conclude that one of the guards is to blame. I haven’t asked any questions or raised the matter at all as I do not wish to jeopardise my relationship with the staff - their jobs are hard enough without being chastised for their treatment of one of the worst serial killers our country has ever seen.

I am however concerned that the guards may be weak enough to target those who still have a role to play in society. The situation is not one I alone can handle, and I feel I have done my duty by bringing it to your attention.

Yours truly,

Sr. Hr. Carmichael Dubois
