#85: Talking Heads: "Drugs"

Comp: origami 2
Genre: 80's

Talking Heads did some really inventive pop music starting in the 70's and going to 1991. They were sort of the prototypical group that meets at art school and goes on to make interesting music (Pink Floyd is another, but they're architecture instead of art, I think).

This song is from 1979's "Fear of Music," one of the albums that was produced by Brian Eno. I love the offkilter rhythms and general weirdness. The repeated guitar alternation riff and stopstart drums leave you unsettled while still being something that might be danceable if it wasn't so slow. I love the echoey keyboard but that comes in before the vocals.

"And all I see is little dots-dots-dots-dots...
Some are smeared and some are spots
Feels like a murder but thats all right
Somebody said there's too much light
Pull down the shade and it's all right
It'll be over in a minute or two."

There are some really great vocal sampled bits in here too, dubby type effects. Really weird, really cool, vintage Talking Heads.
