Summary: In a last ditch attempt to fix Kibum's (lack of) love life, Nicole signs him up for a dating website. But Kibum isn't interested at all, so things get a little out of control when lawyer and part time singer, Jonghyun, takes a liking to Kibum, despite them never actually talking.
Jinki sighed as he stirred sugar into his coffee, glancing up as he heard feet pad into the kitchen.
“He’s asleep,” Minho whispered as he leant against the counter, “sorry it took so long.”
Jinki shrugged, “it’s not your fault Jonghyun is inept at relationships.” Minho grinned and moved to hold Jinki close, and Jinki’s hands faltered on his coffee as he felt lips brush the nape of his neck.
“I love you,” he heard whispered into his neck as the lips kissed a trail up to his ear.
“I know.” Jinki grinned.
“And?”
“And what?” Jinki could almost feel Minho pouting behind him as the arms around his waist tightened.
“Jinkiiiii,” Minho whined and nipped at his ear, “say it.”
“You’re ridiculous,” he scoffed and turned around in the taller’s arms, “but I love you too.” He leant up to peck Minho, one hand on the other’s jaw as he did so.
They both jumped as the doorbell rang, and Minho reluctantly let go of Jinki’s waist.
“I’ll get it,” he grinned, “you go set up the TV and we’ll have a film night since Key’s in our bed.”
“In retrospect we probably should have made him sleep on the sofa,” Jinki mumbled as the visitor knocked on the door again and Minho made his way to the door. He raised his voice for it to he heard, “there’s no way we’ll both fit on that sofa.”
Minho chuckled in response as he opened the door and his laugh quietened.
“Jonghyun … what are you doing here?” Jinki came out of the kitchen after hearing Jonghyun’s name and appeared behind Minho.
“Hey, I - … I heard Kibum was here and I...” He quietened and Minho just nodded as Jinki ushered him in. Jonghyun looked tired, incredibly so, and Jinki watched him somewhat worriedly as he anxiously glanced around their apartment for signs of Kibum.
“He’s asleep,” he offered, “come and sit down, I’ll get you a drink.” Jonghyun sunk into the sofa, eyes on the blank TV screen, and sighed.
“I really fucked up,” he murmured and Minho sat beside him, unsure of how to console him. Consoling Jonghyun was usually Jinki’s thing, not his, since Jonghyun was Jinki’s friend primarily. He was hit with relief as Jinki came into the room, holding three mugs, and he shifted up so that Jinki could sit next to Jonghyun.Jinki smiled at him as he passed him his coffee and patted him on his knee as he sat down as a silent thank you.
“I’m not saying what you did didn’t suck,” Jinki replied, taking a sip of his coffee, “because it really did, but it’s just … Kibum’s very sensitive.”
Jonghyun glanced up confused.
“What do you mean?”
“He’s had some shitty relationships in the past,” Jinki replied and Jonghyun immediately threw a glare in Minho’s direction. Minho’s eyes bugged open.
“No,” he affirmed, “not me.”
“Who then?”
Minho put his mug down and sighed, running a hand through his hair.
“It’s not really my place to-”
“Tell him, Minho,” Jinki interrupted, “he needs to know.”
“Okay fine,” Minho shifted and Jonghyun watched intently. “A good few years ago, maybe five or six years, when we were in college, Kibum had this boyfriend who was a couple of years above us. He was actually really nice at first and I didn’t think anything of it but then he started getting … abusive when other guys, or girls in fact, showed interest in Kibum. And he’d hit him and call him awful names and Key never told anyone because he thought he deserved it and even though it’s been years those feelings are still lingering and it’s awful.”
“He needs someone stable that can tell him that he’s beautiful until he believes it and that values him as a person more than that asshole ever did.”
“That’s so fucked up,” Jonghyun groaned, “fuck, I screwed up.”
“He’s in there thinking he isn’t worth anything to you - something about him being a hassle.”
“He isn’t a hassle. God, he isn’t at all, he’s the best thing that’s happened to me in years.”
“Why didn’t you say that then?” Jonghyun heard from the other side of the room and his eyes flicked upwards to see Kibum in the doorway, eyes puffy, hair messy, drowning underneath a double duvet.
“Kibum-” he gasped and he felt Jinki shift at his side.
“I’ve got to go … wash … the kettle,” Jinki excused himself, pulling Minho along with him, and they disappeared into the kitchen, leaving Jonghyun and Kibum alone.
“Hey,” Jonghyun whispered as he stood, carefully going to approach Kibum. He reached up to stroke a tear track on his cheek but Kibum flinched away and Jonghyun bit his lip for the stab of pain he got from it.
“I’m really sorry,” he continued as a whisper and Kibum just shuffled in his duvet, pulling the massive thing around him even tighter. “This … this isn’t a hassle, you’re not a hassle, you’ll never be a hassle because I lov-”
Kibum’s eyes flew open as Jonghyun suddenly stopped.
“You what?”
“I …,” Jonghyun looked at the man in front of him with his scruffy hair and his tear worn cheeks and he knew that he’d never loved anyone as much as he loved Kibum in that moment, and he knew he would never love anyone else again. Kibum was his be all and end all and despite it being a rocky road on the way he knew he wouldn’t have changed it for the world.
“I love you,” he admitted, biting his lip, and he frowned as Kibum’s brow burrowed in confusion.
“But … Nicole?”
“Nicole’s not important,” Jonghyun replied as he brought Kibum into his arms, including the huge mass of duvet around him. Kibum squirmed a bit, arms trapped. “You’re the only person I want to be with.” He leant in to kiss Kibum’s nose and the younger flushed a bit before diverting his eyes. “I was just confused and stupid and I’m really sorry, I never meant for you to -”
“Shut up,” Kibum interrupted and Jonghyun’s heart skipped a beat.
“Kibum, please, I need you-” He was nearly sobbing now, hands fisted into the fabric of the duvet, desperately pulling the bundle of Kibum closer.
“I said shut up, didn’t I?” Jonghyun caught the small on Kibum’s face and he frowned, confused.
“You’re going to have to make it up to me,” Kibum warned as he shuffled back into the bedroom and Jonghyun followed, watching his back as he arranged the duvet on the bed and moved to fuss over his hair and face in the full length mirror. “I’m not just going to let you get away with this.” He sent a glare in Jonghyun’s direction but the older could only grin.
--
Jonghyun lay in bed, the breeze ruffling his curtains and making him shiver, and he glanced down to his side where Kibum lay, fingers loosely curled around his bicep, clinging on like a koala. He grinned, shifting to his side so that he could look at Kibum in more detail, and he counted his blessings that he’d met Kibum and that he was here by his side, breathing in softly, his eyelashes fanned out like feathers. He entwined one of his hands with one of Kibum’s and his eyelashes fluttered close as he pulled the younger close, caging him in his arms and inhaling. He was sure their road would be a rocky one as no river runs smoothly, but in that moment he knew that he would be addicted to Kibum for life and nothing would be able to cure that.
