i'm settling in pretty well, i think. it's an easy walk to the main bus/train terminal. later there i'll pick up a monthly bus card. 60 euros for the whole month. seems a little steep.
the 7 line also stops two blocks from my place. the 7 and the 407 go to the philips complex. the 407 is an express right from the main terminal.
i'm in building 7 in the philips campus. and everything is new. and i mean new. all of philips apptech (applied technologies) just moved in here. they tell me all these things are "on the way": campus wireless, a PC for me, an ID card for me with 'chipknip' on it, a netword userID for me... it seems there's a backup for some of these things for the regulars. so i'll hafta wait.
the office is pretty sweet, though. i mean, it's philips. and it's new. so you can imagine how new everything is. and screw cubicles! i'm not sure of those are an american invention or not, but i never ever liked them. there so... evil. seriously. they say, "stay away from me. i may have to work near you, but i want to pretend i'm not." here they have rows of long desks. the desks are about 3 feet by 6 feet. you get a lot of space. they're in rows of two desks next to each other, facing two other desks, but with a rail in between those facing. on that rail is your flat-panel monitor. on a swingarm. and your trays and book rack are also attached. and all the office phones are these little nokia cordless thingers in a cradle that makes them look like docked cell phones. it's very "ikea". or rather, to give credit where credit is due... ikea is very "it". it... being... northern european? or atleast, anywhere that has a language with words that have double-As in them.
the office.
and just before our "wing" in the hallway is a coffee automaat. where one can get "koffie", "mokka", "cappuccino", "warme chocolade", "thee", "water", and... "wiener melange"...? it's one cup, and i mean one cup. like the official measurement cup. a shot, basically.
there's lots of glass too. the internal doors are glass. the window next to me goes from the ceiling to the floor. even the turnstyles at the entrance have glass. the turnstyles themselves are metal, but the rest of hte structure is glass.
the view out of my window, to the B wing, i believe.
i bought a pack of smokes late sunday night. at a pub, where i stopped in for a pint and some smokes (...and foudn out that it's more like either a cup of a quart). the cigarette vending machines require a certain coin that is supposed to ensure that you are over 16. that struck me as odd. but then again, there are no ticket takers when getting on european trains. you just buy one. and get go get on. and be honest. i've got about 5 smokes left.
also, i feel very very short.
