5 Heros: The Meme

Sep 05, 2009 15:59

The rules:  List 5 of of your heros, and why.  At least one should be someone you actually know.
Here are mine.

(1) Hans & Sophie Scholl, Christoph Probst et all (“The White Rose”)
They were a very small group of German students who, in 1942, advocated non-violent resistance against the Third Reich knowing it would end their lives.  Such bravery and conviction for social justice in the face of certain death is unfathomable to me.

(2) Roger Maris
Maris broke Babe Ruth’s record for most home runs in one season.  Maris received hate mail and death threats for this feat.  His hair started to fall out in clumps from stress.  He later said he would have been better off if he had never threatened Ruth’s record.  He was a small town boy who played ball only as a means to an end, to provide for his family, and cared little for public opinion or the press.  Maris would rather have not been in the spotlight, and did not want the attention his amazing ability furnished.  Great ability and even greater humility are rarely seen at the same time.

(3) Karen Sterling (my mom)
She taught me what it really means care about others.

(4) Lao-Tzu
Author of the Tao The Ching.  No greater book will ever be written.

(5) Patsy Stone
I really should not have to make any comment about this one.
