How would you write Australia? anonymous February 21 2011, 12:08:01 UTC
There have been a lot of requests for Australia lately that I'd love to give a try, but since there's no actual canon for him beyond a design, I'm at a loss. I've loved what I've read of him so far, but how would you characterize him?

Casually badass. In that he does all this totally badass stuff (befriend the deadliest animals in the world, wander in the outback, cliffdive, surf with sharks, etc) without thinking anything of it - he's not impressed with himself at all ( ... )

I agree with the above anon for the most part but I like the idea of him being rough around the edges too, especially keeping in mind originally Australia was a penal colony. So implying some sort of behavior that could land him in a prison (a penchant for fighting or drunken fights?) could mesh in well.

Agreed, but I think that it can speak to " just thinking [insert crazy idea here] is a good idea" ....a good idea that landed him in prison

How much strine is too much? anonymous February 21 2011, 21:57:03 UTC
More often than not, through google you find all of the dictionaries of strine, but there's also comments about how it only really gets used by the bogans (hicks).

So, I can certainly see Australia using it, because he's just as much his bogans as his cityfolk, but to the same extent that, say, an American wouldn't naturally fill an entire sentence with solely slang terms, to what extent should Australia use it?

I usually say to avoid those dictionaries, because while there's some good stuff in them, there's also a whole lot of really outdated/obscure words and phrases. If you are not really familiar with the way Australians speak, it would be hard to know what to use and what to avoid. This one appears to be pretty good ( ... )

The fairdinkumbamf's surf's up posts are quite good, especially because there are actually a number of Aussies there hamming it up.

There's a post in there somewhere, I think for Australia Day where a number of people made some helpful posts on strine and such too

Australian here! Glad to hear people are interested in writing him! I'll try to give you some of my thoughts.

As above anon said, casually badass and 'not impressed with himself' are both great points. Australians make great soldiers but do not glorify in war or 'winning'. Our (and NZ's) national day of remembrance is on the anniversary of a campaign we lost. Related to this: bragging, gloating, and talking about your achievements is frowned upon. You might find the weekly discussions over on the Australia comm useful: http://community.livejournal.com/fairdinkumbamf/tag/surf%27s%20up%21

There's a lot of discussion on characterization and head canon there.
