How do you justify Japan?

Jun 02, 2012 00:01

I've been wanting to make this wank for a while now but haven't really had the time, but here I am now. :)

I'll just come out and make the proposal that Japan is a Mary Sue character. Or at least, really, really pushing the envelope. For a while I really liked him, I thought he was adorable (actually his picture was the reason I got into Hetalia to ( Read more... )

character: japan, general: canon

You can honestly cite as much history as you want but it doesn't matter how it is in real life, Himaruya interprets it all as he wants to and makes the characters act as he wants to.They don't behave strictly off of how very controversial history dictates.

Well then there you go, you answered your own goddamn question. Himaruya made a Japan that generally doesn't make many enemies or many friends. He's just kind of there. That's how his personality is. He's similar to Canada, really. Do you think Canada is horrible because weh weh no one hates him?

It's just that personality doesn't give other characters a pass so I scratch my head when you say that it does for Japan

What the fuck do you even mean by that? No one tries to call any other character in this fandom a Mary Sue except Seychelles. Which is also total bullshit and is pretty much entirely because she's a girl and bawww vagina ~getting in the way~ of my precious buttsex. Beyond that, no one else gets this shit. Just Japan.

I'm not saying any of this means that he's a Sue.

....You fucking called him a Mary Sue in your first post.

They do that with Belgium too :(

But yeah, I've noticed that Wfen only likes call only one male character a Mary Sue and watered-down, and that's Japan. Why only this guy? One example: China was and is not exactly the paragon of Good, but nobody complains that he's portrayed as a nice, sympathetic big brother guy.

...Yeah, I forgot about it with Belgium. But then ofc the bullshit's in a whole different category when it's aimed at female characters.

First of all, chill out, pal. Let's not swear at each other for no reason.

Second of all, how have I answered my own question? The history is controversial so when everyone comes at me saying "Oh, he wouldn't be hated by so-and-so because he actually did something good for them", I blow it off because Himaruya doesn't have to translate it into canon in a positive way. And before you call it hypocrisy, I say the same for negative actions. But if his positive actions in history are going to be shown actively, then at least some negative ones should be too.

And as for your second paragraph I'm talking about your claim that his likeable personality means that people aren't going dislike him as much as the next guy. Plenty of characters have likeable personalities. This never means they don't have characters who dislike them or have characters who fight over their attention.

I meant that it doesn't definitely mean that he's a Sue. It could just mean bias.
