I think it's generally agreed that fighting about headcanon is pointless. Live and let live and all that. However, you can't just make shit up and say that nobody can argue about it because headcanon is sacred. In order for an idea to qualify as headcanon, it needs to work with actual canon. That's the whole point. It's something that's not

A) Someone insists that their headcanon is TRUFAX and will actually argue with you if you don't agree with them
B) When they act like the creator SHOULD make their headcanon actual canon, otherwise the series is total crap.
B is especially disrespectful. I generally don't like it when people act like headcanons are better than real canon, but I can at least understand it so long as they don't act like the creator owes them anything, or that the series would be terrible without their ever-so precious headcanon >_>

I've never actually ran into your example B. Wow, some people think highly of their own ideas. :O

My definition of headcanon is pretty much what you have in mind, (at least, that's how I govern my headcanons. I try to make 'em work/plausible otherwise I'm just making shizz up!) but sometimes it depends on the series. Then there's AU's to consider. (for example, if your fandom is about animals, and you wanna imagine the bazillion types of lives they could live "if they were humans", or even if you switch around who the main focus is...it can get pretty multiverse-y!)
But yeah, I think example B is pretty rare but it can happen @_@ (Or people only like the series because they adore ONE CHARACTER...but that's another story!)

I haven't really seen people fight about the definition, so I guess I'm lucky in that respect :'D somehow I always end up being caught in the crossfire of shipwars though

For me, it's the opposite. I've never been in a Hetalia shipwar or even seen one take place. Watching wank unfold is kind of my guilty pleasure for boring evenings, so I sometimes wish I'd get to see some real fighting. I guess I hang out in the wrong places.

Yeah it mostly happens among popular pairings. Like if you wanna see some wank, just go on tumblr and look under usuk, fruk or spamano tags xD Wank is my guilty pleasure too, that's part of why I love this comm so much
I like all of those pairings too though, along with like EVERY OTHER PAIRING EVER, so while USUK & FRUK fangirls are going at it, I'm either like "I CAN'T CHOOSE SIDES DANGIT" or I sit in my little FRUS boat between the two while neither side acknowledges my ship as a threat :'D

It used to be for me as well, but now it just depresses me :/. Probably because I've seen too much of it.

Oh God, THIS ^. On one occassion on a forum I kept being repeatedly told by the same person that a pairing I had was 'impossible'. Every single time I so much as mentioned it. It wasn't impossible. There was, in fact, evidence to support it. It just contradicted the pairing they shipped that particular character with. I didn't even ship the pairing, I just suspected it was possible, and said that. The thing that pissed me off was how they kept insisting it was 'impossible', when, as I pointed out, the topic was subjective not objective, and nothing was proved either way.
