Attacking people's headcanon, and why does virginity matter so much?

Dec 11, 2011 16:05

This is kind of a double wank, about two things that have been bothering me lately.

The first (and main) wank comes to me after I was looking through some entries on APH Headcanon on tumbler. This post is largely provoked by the responses I saw to one piece of headcanon in particular on the site.

Wank under the cut )

general: fandom, general: canon

I can understand feeling annoyed if someone's head-canon disagrees with yours, but to turn it into a full-blown, angry debate? I can only see that being justified if someone posted a really offensive head-canon, and even then I don't understand how it can turn into a really-super-heated argument. As you said these are just head-canons :'D

So yeah I don't get it either orz

As for the Virginity thing, I've seen it go both ways so its generally like this:

  • A) character x can only have sex with character y because they're your OTP. If one or both partners have sex with someone who isn't their tru luv, then it leads to either heartbreak/angst or its "just not the saaaame". Or they have to be pure because they were waiting for that special someone, or just plain weren't all that excited about sex until so-and-so came into their lives.
  • 1a)Also if you're a Virgin, then seeing character xyz as a virgin pretty much becomes more relate-able, and not just for the sake of self-insertion.
  • B) If so-and-so isn't a virgin, then they have more...er... ( ... )

Agreed. This is going off on a major tangent, but it's the fact that Twilight is an dreadfully written, over-rated peice of sexist crap, and Edward Cullen is a possessive, violent, jealous, emotionless creeper that causes the Twilight-hate - the sparkling/chaste vampire/mauling of the vampire myth aspect is just the icing on the cake as far as awfulness is concerned. I think it's kinda the other way round from how you (Mizu) put it *~*. I just think the whole sparkle-thing is just poked fun at the most since it is probably the most awful and mock-able plot device to emerge from modern literature in recent years. Glittery vampires are just the unintentional piece of comedic genius of the last century XD
