Honestly, the more and more I've been in fandom, the more and more I find the rampant desire to prove X/Y is canon ridiculous. The only reason I like anything as canon, or even heavily ship-teased, is because it means more of their interaction, adn therefore more production of fanart, doujin, and merch of those two characters together.
Ship preferences are exactly that--preferences, and, for a lot of people, canon means absolutely NOTHING. I mean, look at all the people who still ship Harry/Draco and Zutara. They don't care, because their ship preference happens to be different than canon, and that's fine! If it's what makes you happy, excellent. Carry on.
Canon is not the end all, and I wish people would stop using it like it's some magical word that acts as a certificate to prove their pair is ~The Best One Ever~
[edit] I also want to add, sometimes I think people are so vehement about their pair being canon because they think it will somehow make all their rival pairs disappear. I'm sorry, but if UsUk ever does become canon, it's not like all the FrUk is going to magically vanish....
Some of the fandoms I was in before Hetalia would have one character in more than one canon ship, and it was just as crazy seeing people argue over which ship was the "real" canon despite that the character had clearly dated both of them in the series.
Even if you get something at the status of "canon" it doesn't say that it's the only pairing that will and ever happen. Especially with something like Hetalia, where the time in the canon goes over 2,000 years at least. It's impossible for me to believe over that time, they'd only have one person they'd love and THAT'S it.
I completely agree. Rival ships will not disappear. In fact, the reason I love a lot of non-canon pairings is because I as a fic writer and RPer enjoy making up how those two nations would act around each other when in a relationship. So I'm more inclined to write about something that isn't in canon than what's already been shown. And I'm sure everyone else who ships other things have their own reasons that they won't give up on no matter what.
