I've only been to a couple of gatherings, both at cons and otherwise, but I've kind of noticed a trend that seems...exclusive? It kind of bothers me ( Read more... )

I get this...

I cosplay, but this was my first year doing so. When I went to SDCC, myself and another friend dressed up as Latvia and Russia. But we had another friend who came with us who didn't dress up at all.

Long story short...we (my friend and I in costume) met up with other cosplayers who we ended up hanging out with. My friend not in costume ended up holding all of our stuff when we were asked to stop and pose for pictures.
I felt really guilty about the whole ordeal.

Some cosplayers can be really exclusive to non-cosplayers. I'm not saying all--my group tries not to be--but they can. Honestly, I think it's the excitement of being with other people in cosplay. I hate to sound this way, but a lot of us are kind of socially awkward so it's like, "OMG SOMEONE ELSE WHO UNDERSTANDS ME"...but then that leads to exclusion in mettings of the people who do understand them but are not in costume.

And I'm in college now and I have the opportunity to go to Hetalia Day nearby, but I'm not gonna go because I don't have my costume and I don't want to be excluded.

So I get this.
