So I'm trying to put together rules and definitions and mission-statements and things for the communities profile. I would seriously love any input you can offer on any of this.
When you say that it doesn't mean that it needs to be dark and brutally angsty all the time and that it can be happy as well, are you trying to say that it needs to have some basis in history, whether happy or sad? That's kind of what I got out of that.
For number 5, please don't forget warnings for triggering themes! It's a pet peeve of mine when there are no warnings for something that could potentially be triggering.
All in all, it looks good and I can't think of anything off the top of my head that could be added.
I don't think it necessarily has to have a historical basis; yesterday I read a fic that wasn't based at a particular point in time or anything, but it was well done and felt "real." I think there's a fair percentage of fics that just take place in "contemporary" and are well-done and not cracky. I mean, unless they're an AU or something, they'll have some political and cultural stuff, and the history is there, but not everything here has to be "historical fiction." Hm... so figuring out how to explain that...
And okay, I'll pop "warnings" into the things that need to go on labels.
I just wanted to say that I like what you've said so far pertaining to the definition of "crack," because with a community like this, a line has to be drawn. Most of the fics I stumble upon are either decidedly not-crack (and usually have to do with srs bsns historical events), or fluffy slice-of-life types. I do like the crack, but my mind tends to wander over controversial events like the Vietnam War, and ask questions such as "What would England think of the movie Braveheart?"
"What would England think of the movie Braveheart?"
Or what would England and Scotland say after watching it. That sounds like a good fic. knowing how england is, he'd probably start arguing with scotland. ^^;;
I'm glad you approve! I worried a little bit at defining it, because I know there are some people who would call fantasy or AUs crack, but if you're going to un-crack Hetalia you definitely need some fantasy elements to keep the nation-tan aspect of it, and if you're not going to keep that than it's an AU and on and on... So I think my main definition is that things are serious.
Only mods have access to editing tags, right? I think once the bio and rules are in place in the info page, we'll need to put a link on how to use lj-cut and maybe a little tutorial on very simple html for those who may need it. I can work on those tutorials.
Ah, hm, I'd like to set it so that anybody can add tags... Sometimes people think of a really good tag that's not there yet... Tutorials are a great idea.
Sounds good so far. As regards 'historical fiction', I'd say while Hetalia fic doesn't have to be tied to a specific historical event to be non-cracky, you should at least be able to identify the decade, or put it before or after any major historical events involving the countries it features.
