He was, actually, as far from a flower-lover as anybody could be. Juan could never understand his little sister's fixation with all those fragile blooms that would just fade out and die anyway. And so it came as a big surprise to Antonio - and to himself, in actuality - that he had spent the afternoon in the garden, smelling of flowers other than the bunch he had clumsily gathered in his chubby little hands.

However, it had not come as a surprise to the older kingdom that when he had reached for the flowers, thinking they were for him, Las Islas Filipinas pouted in that cute way only children could pull of, and said "Get your hands off it! This is for Néni!". After all, Spain had carelessly mistaken Juan for his twin a few months ago, and had forced him into Maria's clothes. He presumed he was still not forgiven.

So it was with a breezy smile on his face that Antonio watched his little boy fix his hair in front of the mirror, not realizing how the young colony had changed into his finest clothes, and how Juan's face was illuminated by a feverish red haze.

When she sees him walking - no, wobbling, his feet were just so small - towards her, she smiles, but doesn't know what to think, other than how Juan really did resemble Romano (but that wasn't such a nice thing to say, wasn't it?) what with that stray little curl he had sticking out in the wrong direction and the cute little pout marring his otherwise immaculate features.

Hungary worries, just a bit. She has never seen dear, sweet Filipinas look so flustered. (That look is really cute on him, still.) So Elizaveta picks up her skirts, rushes to him, and envelops him in an embrace smelling of flowers.

She asks him why he suddenly wanted to meet with her, and when all of Filipinas' attempts at answering her turns him into a blubbering mess, she questions him instead about the flowers in his hands.

Juan thrust the messy wildflower bouquet in the older Nation's hands, flushing madly and looking into something off in the distance as his chocolate eyes struggled to focus on something, anything else that wasn't her. He just couldn't bear to look at Hungary when he said it - even in his childish innocence, he knew that if he said it, he would lose her forever. He would no longer be her kedves. She would no longer be Aunty Eliza but something more - or less. But if she said yes, he knew that he would be the happiest being alive.

So he decides to tell her, and to hell with everything else. "Aunty Eliz - Hungary - I-I like you."

Her face was frozen, but after a few moments Hungary took Las Islas Filipinas in her arms, pressing a crown of kisses to his soft dark hair. "Oh, how sweet of you, kedves, of course Néni loves you too!" she says, forcing herself to not notice the gloom clouding her ward's expression, to not think about how when he gets his growth spurt in a few years he would have just as much as a fighting chance for her heart as Roderich would ever have.

Because her love for him could never be the same as his, and they both knew it.

It comes off as a surprise, then. when after a few hours of him holing himself up in his bedroom, and an hour of crying his eyes raw on the bedsheets, the door opens and a green mirage appears, holding a tray of food in one hand and the doorknob in the other.

"Spain has been worried about you, kedves." She smiles, as if she hadn't noticed the red in his eyes and the broken expression on his face. "Why didn't you come to dinner?"

"I'm not hungry." How can she be so happy? How can she still smile at him? Didn't females get so angry when a male they didn't like suddenly said "I like you"? (Because when Romano did that to his twin, Maria got so angry that evn after two years she still loathed Valentine's Day.)

"Maybe not now, Juan, but later you will be." Elizaveta moves closer, puts the tray down on the table, and holds his shaking body close. "Not just for food, too - power, riches, respect, autonomy, maturity...and love." She presses a kiss against his hair, and feels his heart beating against her body.

"I am...sorry, kedves. While it is true that I love you-" Filipinas' big eyes widen a fracton, but Elizaveta doesn't allow him an answer, simply holds him close. "-I cannot love you. Not yet. For you are young, and have much more to see. The world is yours to explore, and yours to love, my dear Juan." At that realization, her lips tighten in a line, fighting back unexplained tears. "It is not the right time to say that you love me."

Juan wants to cry at that, but his "Aunt"'s (for now, she was just his Aunt, he thinks, but just for now) voice hum a lullaby. The one he always loved to hear from her and nobody else. He finds himself lost in th dark recesses of a dreamless sleep.

When the young colony begins to snore, Hungary dabs at the tears in her eyes with the collar of her blouse, presses a last, longing kiss to the young boy's forehead, and rearranges him for a good night's rest.

As she stands up to close the door and blow out the lights, it is with strangely yearning green eyes that Hungary turns back to her ward and says, "Jó éjt, én szívem."

Moon River, wider than a mile,
I'm crossing you in style some day.
Oh, dream maker, you heart breaker,
wherever you're going I'm going your way.
Two drifters off to see the world.
There's such a lot of world to see.
We're after the same rainbow's end--
waiting 'round the bend,
my huckleberry friend,
Moon River and me.

Miss Chay, I hope you like this. I also hope that it is somehow worthy of your awesomeness. =_=" Due to the endng being...well, open-ended, I might add to this someday with some sort-of comedic epilogue of some sorts.
