[Part 15] A tale of two hair curls [3b/?] anonymous June 12 2011, 02:46:31 UTC
What’s your favorite animal? Svalbard asked after a while.

What d’you think of tigers? I think they’re great! Tigers are really brave and strong! What about you?

Reindeer. They’re so fluffy, especially the babies…

Hmm, I thought you would like polar bears. I heard you had a lot! Svalbard would’ve rolled her eyes if she had any.

They’re annoying.

What? Why would you think they’re annoying? They’re probably very fierce, too!

They ARE annoying…you can’t even leave Longyearbyen without a gun, they’re so happy to disembowel you…if you go to the university, your first class is how to shoot a gun…Judging by his face, Spirit appeared rather surprised at that fact.

Really? There are that many polar bears in Norway? They’re that dangerous?

Not Norway, Svalbard. Which…is a part of Norway, but still.

Her own statement made her think for a moment. She hadn’t been to Longyearbyen in…nearly a hundred years, back when it was an American settlement. She hadn't visited Sveagruva or Ny Alesund after she started floating around Norway, either, and had yet to see Barentsburg. Pyramiden had been abandoned, and all Svalbard would be able to visit were the ruins that couldn't really be called ruins, since the cold would preserve them for forever and ever and ever-

But there was no point dwelling on it. Instead, she decided to continue the conversation.

However, as they spoke, something nagged at the back of Svalbard’s head. She tried to dismiss it, but curiosity eventually won over, and she asked.

You’re pretty outgoing…in my opinion, anyway, but you don’t really talk to anyone. Why’s that? Spirit’s smile, for a moment, faltered, and Svalbard felt like she really shouldn’t have asked.

Well…everyone’s too weirded out by my face to talk to me…So, when I saw you that day, I thought that maybe, since you floated, you wouldn’t care so much. But then you screamed and hid behind Norway’s head, and I…felt really sad. But then you came out! I decided to try talking to you, and here we are!

Oh.

Oh.

Svalbard immediately felt bad. She hadn’t really considered Spirit’s feelings when they first met, just thought of him as a monster as soon as she saw him, without even stopping for a moment to consider his feelings.

Jan had been right, she shouldn’t have been so mean.

Um…I’m sorry.

It’s okay!

No, really, I’m sorry…you’re a really great hair curl and I just wrote you off as a monster before we even spoke a word to each other…

No really, it’s okay! We shouldn’t talk about that now, okay? Spirit bobbed the part of himself where his…facial features…were, though it was somewhat hard to see as Korea had drifted even farther away. I like you! And you like me too…it’s okay like that, okay?

Svalbard nodded, though she still felt awful.

Yeah…I like you, too, and-

How do you think we’ll meet in the future? I couldn’t wait for the meeting! I missed you all month~

I…don’t know. Norway won’t listen to me…and I can’t just float off on my own. I…it would be scary, you know? I haven’t been more than a few centimeters away from Norway in…I don’t even know how long. A century.

I wouldn’t ask you to do that! Spirit looked almost offended by the idea, though it was hard to tell at that distance. It’s okay, I understand. Hmm…maybe you should try talking to him, make some kind of arrangement? I wish Norway was in East Asia…That would make things so much easier!

And I wish South Korea was in Northern Europe...and I don’t know if I’ll be able to talk to him-Norway, I mean-but I’ll try, okay? Spirit bobbed his…”head” again, but the meeting had ended before he could continue.

There’ll be meetings for a few days…I’ll see you tomorrow, okay? Svalbard said, having to mentally shout as Korea and Norway moved even farther away.

Okay! And I’ll talk to Korea about it. Bye!

Eh…um…Norge? Svalbard asked hesitantly once they arrived at the hotel where he was staying during the conference. When Norway didn’t answer, she tried again.

And again. And again. And again…

Norge Norge Norge Norge Norge Norge Norge Norge NORGE….Svalbard chanted. It got boring after a while, and she was tempted to give up…but she said she would try to talk to him!

WHAT?! Norway finally exclaimed-mentally, of course. For a second, Svalbard was rather surprised, but then noted that he was probably rather annoyed and it was very hard to hide emotions with thought connections. Before Svalbard could say anything though, he continued.

I’m hearing…your MURMURING all the time! Do you know how that makes me feel? I thought I could just ignore you, but it seems to me that I can’t! What are you, anyway? I had always thought that you were some…some voice at the back of my head, but that obviously can’t be it! Who and what the hell are you?

If Svalbard could, she would have winced. That…was a bit harsh, she thought.

It was apparent that Norway had no idea how to properly use his thoughts-but Svalbard couldn’t really blame him for that. Telepathy was probably something entirely new. Therefore, he had accidently broadcasted his thoughts instead of channeling them like one was supposed to. Luckily for him, the only people able to hear him were Svalbard and Jan Mayen.

Jan spoke before she could.

Sval, what did you say? You know he never listens! To Norway, his tone was much flatter. That was your hair curl. She’s Svalbard, sometimes known as Sval. I’m the dot that floats next to her, Jan Mayen. What I can’t believe is that it took you nearly a hundred years to finally listen to either of us.

There was silence.

Finally, Svalbard decided to say something to end it. Ehh…Norge…are you okay?

Yes, I’m well, Svalbard. This is just a bit difficult to digest. Norway had calmed down considerably, which was a large relief-an angry Norway wasn’t a pleasant one. Now, I’d like you to explain.

Ehh…so, you know when I started floating around you after 1925? That signified the Svalbard Treaty. I tried to tell you, but, ehh…you never wanted to listen.

Oh, was his only answer.

Oh.

After a while, Norway elaborated.

I always thought I went insane at that time…that you were a voice in my head. So you’re Svalbard?

Yep.

And the little dot next to you…that’s Jan Mayen?

Pretty much, yes.

Hmm.

And that was it, hmm. Svalbard decided that was enough progress for the day, and soon, all three of them went to sleep.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pfft, this has to be the most fun I’ve ever had writing a pairing.

And may I say that I don’t think Norway’s hair curl is Svalbard? Svalbard had very little to do with Norway until the late 1700’s (it was discovered in 1596) and was given to Norway in 1920 through the Svalbard Treaty, taking effect in 1925. Norwegians didn’t even become the largest group of people there until ten years ago, and there is still a large population of Russians and Ukrainians.

The main reason I really don’t think hair curl = Svalbard is the case is because Norway was shown with his hair curl in a sketch from when he was a little kid. Norway couldn’t have been so small in the late 1920’s. Here’s the picture: http://www.shoutwiki.com/w/images/hetalia/a/aa/Young-Norway.png

Did I mention that he’s adorable? I should.

Also, the reason Svalbard says “eh” so much is because I read once that eh is the Norwegian form of um. It different in different languages-Japanese has “eto”, and Swedish has “ah”.

This is sooo cute! I can't wait for more :)

It makes me hope that Svalbard and Spirit have a happily ever after, even if I'm not really sure how that would work...

I love how you made the hair curls' personality similar to their owners, but not the same. It's so cute! Can't wait for the next bit~
