If you asked in a rhetoric way I'm sorry for the long rambling.
I think it comes from the fairy tales-witches usually demanded a child in exchange for something-because of the general consensus that children is the most valued thing you can have at least from an emotional point of view. Also firstborns were usually the ones to inherit whatever material possessions the family had (unless you were a girl but I'm not going there) so they had value even from a material point of view.
Or it could be because after suffering a baby with a colic you want to get rid of them, I'm not sure xD.
Now, I wonder if we can call dibs on scanlations of these? :33333
