Oh man. I knew what was coming, considering the history of these two nations, but it still hurt to read. I love fics that are heavy with history and still manages to keep characters IC, like yours!

It's really a tough kind of balance and I know I've been told by people I RP with a number of times that you can't have history win out over the characters' personalities, so... I'm glad you say I found a good balance there!
