Lovino, a tragically ill but still adorably spiky boy, was a wealthy aristocrat’s son who had bribed his way onto the boat. Normally it would have annoyed Mathew, who had gone through a lot of trouble to stow himself away, but Lovino’s motives were definitely in the right place. He had done it in order to avoid a rather disturbing marriage arrangement with his estranged half brother Feliciano. Lovino had explained it was in no way Feliciano’s idea, but instead Feliciano’s mother’s attempt to try bring Feliciano back into the family line, thus merging their fortunes without needing a messy divorce from Lovino’s mother. Unfortunately their Father had agreed with the idea in order to get his hands on more money.

Of course Lovino had stopped needing to worry about that too much once Feliciano had also run away, joining the dread pirate Ludwig’s crew. Mathew was pretty sure Lovino only stayed on board because of the handsome Spanish Privateer who was always chasing down the Britannia, although he said it was to avoid his Father just in case.

In any case it was interesting to watch, but he hated the idea of being involved. Three were so many tears and heartfelt confessions and ridiculous misunderstandings that it got worse than annoying. Mathew had always blessed with an unusual invisible like quality that had served him well throughout his life and had continued to do so around the ship.

Until, it seemed, very recently.

As the latest odd development in his long lost brother and their insane Captain’s romance, the Captain had confessed, while he was drunk, but had confessed his feelings none the less.

To Mathew.

Of course Captain Kirkland had thought it was Alfred at the time and been angry and cold about the adamant rejection he had received. It had taken days, days of Alfred being all but abused, to get close enough to explain the misunderstanding. The Captain had been understandably relieved but had sworn Mathew into silence along with demanding a few other minor things, commands which Mathew had unthinkingly obeyed.

The only problem was that the Captain was a little too happy with Mathew’s complete obedience and had been testing how far it would go of late. Whether to satisfy his tension over Alfred by using his similar looking twin or to try and make Alfred jealous Mathew wasn’t sure, but he was not impressed with the latest development at all. Not only was it embarrassing and frightening to have to do something like feed the Captain his dinner, but it put him in the bad books of both Alfred and Francis. They didn’t seem to understand that he couldn’t just say no to the Captain. He wasn’t needed on the ship like Francis and he didn’t have anything to take care of himself if he was thrown off like the not so secretly rich Alfred did.

He didn’t know how far the fiasco would escalate, and he definitely didn’t want to know. And that was why he was doing this, calling on an old favor. He was happy Diederik remembered him so well. Mathew hated to think what he would have to do to get off of the ship if the other man hadn’t. Maybe he would have contacted the General Winter, quite possibly the only pirate ship feared more than the Britannia, but that was an unpleasant thought. Captain Braginski was a frightening man.

The blonde haired man pulled his cowl around himself as he entered the small bar. He was lucky to get away while everyone else had separated at the port, it wouldn’t do for him to be caught now.

The creaking door rattled shut behind him as the bell chimed, merrily announcing his arrival into the small, smoke filled pub. Blue eyes darted around to the sparse patrons before quickly settling on a the stark silhouette of a man. Mathew stalked towards him as quickly as he could, pulling out the chair diagonally to the other pirate and flopping down.

The shadowy figure nodded, pulling out the letter Mathew had sent him, the dark red seal opened, “I take it you are serious about this then?”

After a brief glance around the bar proved there were no immediate threats, Mathew lowered his hood, short blonde locks of hair spilling out at the action, “Yes.” He smiled tightly at the other man, “I think I no longer belong on the Britannia. Francis doesn’t need me, Captain Kirkland doesn’t need me and I’m only getting in my brother’s way.” Mathew shrugged nonchalantly even though the enormity of the decision was making his hands shake under the table, “I need to make it on my own. I’ll never do that if I stay on the Britannia. If I stay there I’ll always be ‘Francis’ assistant’ or ‘Alfred’s twin’. I can’t live like that forever”

The man leaned forwards, minor features coming into the light but his face remaining covered in shadow, “You know this is treason. They have every right to kill you for this.”

Mathew nodded, “I know.”

He was lucky that Diederik owed him or he, as a pirate Captain, and the Captain of the crew he was attempting to hop board to, could have also have had him executed as a traitor to his ship. He was breaking his vow of allegiance to his Captain. It was treason and mutiny.

However Mathew had hidden Diederik in the food storage room when he was severely wounded and being hunted by the Captain Ludwig then had nursed him back to health before letting him go free and not telling any of the crew. He owned Mathew a debt. At the least he had to decline Mathew as a crewmember and let him go free.

“My ship sees a lot of action. Far more than the Britannia and often harsher” Probably because his crew didn’t spend all of their time on emotional drama, “Would you be ready for that.”

“Yes.” His hands were shaking even more at how close he was, “I’m not as weak as I look.”

The other man chucked, “So you’re not. I do remember.” His laughter stopped and his voice was serious as he spoke again, “Williams, I am going to extend you a friendly offer to join my crew, but I want you to think hard about it.”

Mathew suppressed a smile, that would be too much eagerness, a weakness. His hands were still shaking as he thought it over.

He needed to do this. He was sick of being pulled out from behind the backdrop to dance for Alfred and Captain Kirkland before being shoved back again. He would go mad if his whole life ended up being nothing but that.

Maybe it was a clichéd and odd way of going about it, but Mathew was going to step out from behind the backdrop himself and stay out as long as he wanted to. “I thank you for your offer and I accept with full knowledge of what it will mean.”

“Well then,” Diederik leaned forwards so that his admittedly handsome face was visible for the first time, if still slightly shadowy, and extended a gloved hand over the table, “Welcome to The Flying Dutchman.”

Mathew was very happy that when he shook his new Captain’s hand his own hand wasn’t shaking at all.

-----------

A/N - I don't even know...I tried to jam as many cliches as possible, but I wan't able to get them all D: The cliche that really annoys me most is the cabin boy/Pirate Captain, so I had to have it

Notes

-Diederik is the Dutch equivalent of Theodoric, meaning 'ruler of people'(according to internets)

-All Pirate stuff is kinda wishy washy things I think I remember as true

-The "Taking in the Netherlands and hiding him from Germany" is a reference to Canada proving haven to the Dutch Royal family in WWI (look it up <3 CandaxNetherlands is IRL canon. For srs)

Hmmm... I really liked your ideas in this. That being said, this felt more like a summary than a fic, and I'd love to see some specific scenes you mentioned played out in more detail and with technicolor and surround sound actual dialogue (teehee feeding the Captain his food).

So maybe I'm just greedy here ok.

Also, this feels like it has excellent potential to go further. I hope you'll consider continuing it? (:

Random!Anon here would also like to second the notion for a continuation of this fic. You'd done such a lovely job with this, I'd love to read more about Matt's adventures (as well as what will happen to Britannia's crew given their current drama and all XD)

First!anon says a threesome is the obvious best solution. \8D/

Same random!Anon as above post! I'd like to add something else. I disagree with what Anon had said about this fic feeling more like a summary. This anon here thinks that the fic accomplished what it should as a oneshot - it's well paced, it's detailed enough without being overly redundant and I absolutely *love* the narration in this.

Overall, I enjoyed it and had a fun time reading it. :)

First!anon now wishes to note that she had no intention of being rude or anything with her post ;; as she mentioned, she's just greedy and would like to see more of some of the relationships mentioned. ): Which might be solved well enough in a continuation, so really, she's just going to slink away now...

Random!Anon would like to apologize if her comment implied that first!anon was rude. It was not random!anon's intention to make first!anon feel embarrassed in anyway. Random!anon simply wanted to express that she really like the fic as it is. :)

To all you lovely anons~ anonymous July 7 2009, 08:33:20 UTC
Thank you both, I'm very flattered by you both!

Anon 1: I can see why you would say it's summary like, it is something that I felt writing it, however I am notoriously bad for finishing things that go beyond 10 pages (in Word) so I wanted to make it fairly short. Also the intent was to ram as many cliches as I could in there, one after the other, pretty bad I know...

Random!Anon: Thank you so much, I'm so happy that you enjoyed it despite the fact that writing it seemed like it was just every tired old cliche I could think of slammed together in an unholy amalgamation of OOC and je ne sais quoi :D

In regard to a sequel, I don't know? I'm pretty bad with that sort of stuff (which is why I usually only post when I'm done) but I guess I could try?

(A threesome? Alfred would never go for that. Poligamy isn't acceptable in America. And a hero doesn't have to share!)

RE Captcha: "Koll fastener" I-Ivan??

A pirate fill! =D This is certainly a new take on it, though anon isn't very familiar with that cliche since she hasn't read much pirate fiction. This is still great! That was actually a pretty good summary of overdramatic!Britannia and the slightly later story of Matthew going on to be a main character XD

Somehow the title of "The Adventures of Matthew and the Flying Dutchman!" comes to mind. ♥ There's not enough Netherlands/Canada love out there, yo!

and lol, is this by chance going to be a larger series?

recaptcha: yachted overall. Oh yes, I'm betting he is in a yacht, time line and technological discrepancies be damned.

Because that's what the story of their WACKY misadventures would be called <3

INORITE! Where's the Canadutch love? We have matching BFF statues (Man with two hats statues). We have a festival for the Netherlands! It's so there!

(Also in the A/N I totally meant to say we 'provided' safetey in 'WWII', oops XD)

Er...I don't know if it will continue? I just kind of was inspired by the prompt and my weird love/hate for cabin boys/Captains (I never like it but always end up reading it) and also my desire to write some more Canada/Netherlands. I have kinda bad work ethic, but maybe I'll try for it?

(Oh he's on that yacht. Sipping a mother fucking maple martini. Which I don't think exists so we're both breaking logic)

FFFFF. Anon loves you, writer!anon. ;3; Especially Netherlands/Canada. We need a Netherlands-tan. ;___; You know he's totally courting Canada with all those tulips.

But it all seems so very in-character, I love it. <3 Good job!

That was so perfect!! I wish it was longer! It should be made into its own multi-multi-multi-chapter long (redundancy!) AU fic. It was brlliant! I love cliches when they don't take themselves seriously! FFFFFFFFF!
P.S. Excuse my abuse of the exclamation point and lack of coherency....I need to stop browsing the kink meme at odd hours of the night...Also, the captcha says "40,000 giggles." Oh captcha!
