Afterward, he’d begun to perfect the art of animal taming, starting with his own pets. He’d begun with his dogs, teaching them all the common, ‘classic’ tricks he could think of. It was a relatively easy practice, the only tools necessary being treats, a firm voice and patience. When he could think of nothing else, he began to make up tricks of his own, draw from more unique sources, teach them skills from movies, books and anything else he could get his hands on. It got to the point where all he needed to do was gesture with his hands.
So he moved on to teaching his cat.
There was no real danger in training domestic animals, despite what they were capable of. But if Ivan looked hard enough at his pets’ large teeth and sturdy forms, tried to imagine what they would be like outside of their subservience, wild and without a master, he could almost trick himself into believing there was. It didn’t equate to the same, first spark of excitement he had felt on that rainy day, but it was close, and he made due.
When he joined the Roma Antiqua Circus the summer before his senior year of high school, he got his first real taste of danger. He’d never been so close to a lion in his life, and just standing within the ring with nothing but a whip in one hand, a whistle around his neck and the man teaching him the true mastery of taming beasts made him nearly breathless with adrenalin. It was a rush that swept all thought from his mind, brought on action and razor-sharp precision in every skill he had ever been taught and it was more fun than he’d ever had in his life.
He took in everything he was shown with a natural ease, never doubtful of his abilities or fearful of stepping up to the next challenge, the bigger animal, the weaning of the whistle and whip. By the time he started to perform in place of Germania, he was confident he could tame anything that he came across.

Lulz XD; OP didn't realize there was a second part coming. My thoughts on this section mirror that of the comment above, your descriptions being my favorite part so far. <3
