Myth [3/3] anonymous June 29 2009, 00:16:16 UTC
Still, as a Nation, time had a different way of flowing and the matters of the world have kept him busy like no one could have foreseen. Still, despite Alfred being out of sight, he never left his heart.

It was a cold winter night when he returned home from a long day of meetings, to find Alfred sitting on the steps leading to his front door. He looked up at Arthur as the Nation looked down into those blinding eyes, noticing his glasses were missing.

Next to Alfred, lay another young man, noticeably younger than Alfred. Arthur gasped as the other opened his eyes, seeing the same brilliant shine. It was only after that, that Arthur noticed the small horn growing from his forehead. Alfred got up from the steps and eyed his caretaker, his friend, his everything with tears in his eyes.

“What am I?”

*

They couldn’t keep the other one under their care, it would hinder him in leading the life Alfred had been able to live, and neither men wanted that. The young man met the same fate Alfred had when he was young, and was given the name of Matthew.

Unlike Alfred, Matthew had his horn taken from him at older age, meaning he kept some of his mythical abilities. The power to see disappeared with his horn, but the trait of being invisible still ran through his blood.

He was left in the care of Francis, not because Arthur or Alfred wanted to, but because it was the choice of Matthew himself. Arthur had spoken to Francis until the sun rose, explaining him all the things he needed to know in order to give the creature all he needed.

Francis, unexpectedly, took this job most seriously and cared for Matthew like he would for his own son. Soon, Arthur could see the same bond growing between the two as the one he was allowed to share with Alfred, and it brought him joy to see it develop.

Alfred enjoyed spending time with Matthew, though it hurt him that Matthew was still unaware of his nature. He left the task of bringing this news to Francis, and enjoyed the moments he shared with his sibling, sharing those things no one else understood.

*

One time, Alfred had come to Arthur. Looking down on him with those starlit eyes, he asked if it was normal to feel the way he was feeling. If it was normal for someone of his kind to experience a light feeling within his heart.

If someone not of his kind, would ever be able to love him.

Arthur denied his heart aching when he told him that of course he would be loved and that it was completely normal to have feelings of butterflies and springtime. Alfred would smile and Arthur would feel his breath catch at the beauty of it, once again realizing that he would never, ever be able to love someone quite as much as he loved him.

It were these very words Alfred told him when springtime arrived that year and Arthur’s hand touched his forehead lovingly, right where his horn had been, and a single tear dropped.

Their love was blinding as were the kisses, they shared underneath the tree where it all started.

*

Arthur was no stranger to myths. Instead he was its lover, and as they sat side by side in dry, green grass, nothing could bring more bliss. A small wooden box on Arthur’s lap was opened by Alfred’s hands, revealing what once was his.

His fingers brushed the texture of his broken horn, and images of his land, his tales, his real family, came to him like rising water. Arthur watched as Alfred remembered, seeing his eyes turning even brighter at learning his true self.

A slight doubted washed over him, a second of fear that Alfred would leave again, searching for that place in the past, but then Alfred’s hand touched the side of his face and he knew.

They went beyond myth.

Oh, author!anon~ I can tell from the warmth and tenderness flowing through this that the picture must have had the same effect on you that it had on me. The first time I saw that picture, I had an overwhelming desire to protect the unicorn boy, and I felt that same overwhelming desire in Arthur as I was reading this.

This is everything I hoped for. Everything is so lovely and full of emotion. Your descriptions of the field where the unicorn led Arthur to Alfred, and especially of Alfred that first time Arthur saw him are simply beautiful. I love how you kept traits of hetalia!Alfred for unicorn!Alfred. And you included Matthew! ♥♥

There's so much I adore in this, but if I had to pick a single line, it would be this: "Arthur was no stranger to myths. Instead, he was its lover..." (Okay, that's two lines.)

Marvelous, Author!Anon. Thank you so very much!
