5.
“It was an honest mistake,” Alfred mumbled, twenty very complicated minutes later.
Arthur was still face-palming, counting backwards from one hundred to zero to calm himself. Artie had his hand on his shoulder:
“Maybe we should leave now,” he said “Clearly, my dear Arthur, talking with this person won’t bring any benefits to our nation.”
Kirk disagreed:
“He has to work, as much as I’d rather be somewhere else. Now that the four eyed dumbass finished making a fool of himself, we can get this shit started so we can leave.”
“Oh,” Alfred said “I’m sorry I wasn’t expecting three of you to just show up like this, is not like this is in any way unusual or anything.”
This was going to turn sour any minute now. Arthur took a deep breath, raising his head:
“Right. Let’s forget this. Like I said, I don’t know what happened, and it doesn’t matter, so, can we start this sh- uh, the meeting now?”
Nobody heard.
Well, Artie did. And Kirk, who looked at him to show he was taking it into consideration, really, but the others were talking all at the same time, and Alfred was raising his voice and Francis was drooling (Arthur didn’t want to know why. Hungary was drooling too, come to think about it) and he tried again:
“People, could we get this started? The meeting? People?”
“And who the hell do you think you are,” Alfred was saying “Talking like this to a hero-”
“Hero,” Kirk answered “You can’t recognize heroism even when it bites you in the butt, you brainless twat-”
“People,” Arthur said “It would be really good if we-”
“I’m more heroic than you could ever hope to-”
“Yes, entering wars after they are practically over, letting others do most of the-”
“I was the one who finished and I wasn’t even talking about that, you stupid little-“
“Hey,” Arthur was giving up. He pulled at Kirk’s sleeve. The other quit his ranting and looked at him and Arthur said “Don’t waste your time on him. Let’s start the meeting so I can go home and die, please.”
Kirk pressed his lips in a thin line, and Arthur had to admit he looked intimidating, furious like that, eyes flaming and all. But he hadn’t much time to consider this because then Kirk punched the table and bellowed:
“SHUT UP EVERYONE, ARTHUR WANTS TO SPEAK.”
Silence.
Very, very heavy silence, and that wasn’t quite what Arthur had in mind, but he knew how to take a chance when he saw one:
“Erm. Thank you, Kirk. Like I said, there’s no explanation for this, but we shouldn’t let it upset our agenda, right? Ludwig, would you please open the meeting?”
Ludwig - still a little upset by the whole ordeal -gladly took the chance to reestablish some semblance of order in the room. He took his notes.
Arthur allowed himself a trembling breath. He knew this was going to happen. Or something like it, anyway. But coming to the meeting had been the only advice Kiku had for him after a very, very long and strenuous reflection, and he didn’t want to be inconsiderate.
And, well. Maybe, in a very small and hidden part of his, he also wanted to show Alfred and Francis that he didn’t need them, that he had company and people who liked him (even if it was himself, something that could cast doubts on the point he was trying to make, but still) and they could have their stupid party and he didn’t care.
When Ludwig finished his speech,. Kirk was almost drooling of boredom, but Artie smiled at Arthur:
“I’ll get you some tea,” he said, getting up “Would you like some biscuits too?”
“Ah- no, you don’t need to do this; I don’t want to cause trouble-”
“Is not trouble at all,” he said, still smiling (you know, Arthur thought, I have a pretty sweet smile sometimes, just saying) and Kirk snorted.
“Again with the tea”, he mumbled, stretching his arms above his head. Then he rested his hand over Arthur’s leg “Say, do we really have to stay here? Because there are a hundred other things I’d rather be doing now.”
