(god this took forever I am so so sorry. The rest will be up soon-ish, i still haven't decided who to go for though I'm leaving towards Ivan) _______________________ Arthur lost himself in daydreams, letting small incidents fuel the fire of his imagination. He remembers once, when they were curiously alone in his office, Matthew had jokingly offered to read his palm. The glints of gold off his hair, how his hands felt cool and coy, touching his hand. How long has it been since he started to dream about it? Nights spent lying underwater, catching scenes as the light flickers around them -- kissing him, taking him home and taking him to bed. How amazing the skin looked played out under flickers of light. But when he awoke, there was never the long, firm figure stretched out beside him.
When he opened his eyes, their meeting was finishing up, and other nations where standing up to leave already. He searched out the Matthew instinctively, already on his feet. Gently he elbowed through the crowd to call out ; but the boy wasn’t alone. In fact, he was already talking to and laughing with Ivan. Ivan?
“-Не очень хорошо,” Matt was saying, tilting his head slightly towards the other. Arthur couldn’t remember Matt ever speaking Russian - but he hadn’t been paying attention. At least, not until recently.
“Matthew?” The blond head swivelled at the commanding tone. Here Arthur nearly gives in to the urge to just move forward and capture his lips, it could be so easy-
“-thur? Aaaarthur,” A hand waved in front of him, “you wanted something?”
He blinked. Did Matt always have that effect on him?
He was always so busy with the empire and expansion he barely even spoke to the wilder, freer northern man. Now the years outside seem to have made Matt a self contained and self assured presence. The alluring mixture between relaxation, and constant alertness caught up in flinty blue eyes.
“I thought you were heading out soon - didn’t you say you had important talks to clear up among the provinces?” He heard himself say. Those eyes crinkled slightly with his smile, and his pulse quickened.
“Yeah, there are a few things to sort out. I was going to have lunch with Ivan first though.”
Arthur’s blood ran cold, turning to the looming presence of the other infamous northern nation. Ivan’s smile was tense, never once reaching the bruise-coloured eyes. He’s seen what Ivan can do, how careless he can be with his strength and bloodlust, and panics thinking about what he would do to Matt.
“R-Really? I didn’t know.” He said shortly, still staring at Ivan.
“Like we always do, after meetings?” Blond hair entered his field of vision, clearly trying to get his attention.
Wait - always?
“You always do? How long has that been going on?”
“We’ve been doing that - gosh - at least a few years. D-did you want to come with?” Matt glances at him sympathetically. Did he just think Arthur was lonely? Was he simply taking pity on the Brit? It was all wrong, all chaos and unfiltered hurt; but it didn’t hinder the growing need in the base of his belly. Just from watching Matthew lick his lips, or smile nervously - he wanted to master such a force of nature, feel it submit gracefully and lovingly under his hand.
But no. He was going home alone, while Ivan spent the afternoon with him.
“It’s....fine.” He hesitated, grinding his teeth and giving the Russia a pointed glare. Before he left he gave Matthew a tender smile, and seeing it returned gave him hope; maybe he still has a chance.

I've been waiting for someone to tackle this fill, and this looks like a great setup so far. (And anon has to admit to rooting for England/Canada despite shipping both pairs, since that one's the rarer of the two and kind of my OTP, sob.)
Regardless, I look forward to seeing where this goes. 8) Oh, Arthur.

“Here, I know you are liking these,” Ivan said, tossing a white sleeve of paper his Matt’s lap. “The sweet ones with, walnuts.”
Matt twisted around to look at Ivan, open-mouthed, smiling. The face beside him was still simple but not plain, and there was a faint sallow taint lingering under the brow. He broke the roll in two, passing the larger piece to Ivan and accidentally brushing fingers with him. “You’ve been watching me, haven’t you?”
The larger man shrugged, sitting beside his friend on the bench overlooking the large river. As strange as it was to have someone like Ivan shadowing him, Matthew found the attention flattering. “You have been, how you say, hanging around almost two weeks now,” the Russian commented, fingering Matt’s scarf and adjusting it higher around his shy smile.
“I’ll have you know the embassy you work at is right near the library, so I wouldn’t call it a single-purpose trip.”
“Debatable. You go to the library muchly, I am wondering what you find so fascinating.”
“Muchly? Did you learn that from Alfred - please don’t take English lessons from him. And - well,” Matt’s cheeks ripened, “It’s peaceful in the library, and quiet.” Slender fingers crinkled the package in his lap. He looked startled when hands wrapped around the hollowed curve of his stomach, comforting and understanding.
“I like quiet things too. Perhaps it is because of winter?” Snow had started to fall densely in the dimming light of day. It wasn’t a flurry, just a gentle and steady flow around them, practically inevitable this December. The grip curled around his waist, and Matthew let it for a long moment before slowly standing up.
“We should get back now, I know I won’t be noticed for not being there but you will be.” Ivan followed, elbow brushing Matt’s as they walked reluctantly back to the buildings. Staring at the ground in front of his feet, he missed the glance of longing and care Ivan gave him. He could feel it though, and it should have scared him - instead it stoked the heat in his chest, fresh air on glowing embers. He liked it.

The clink of porcelain was muted in Arthur’s large office, padded with plush carpets and rugs from his days as a colony leader. Matthew curled his toes into it like he did when he was a child. The brit can still remember how happy Matt seemed back then, his open joy at the simple things.
“I’m sorry.”
He jerked up, staring at one of his two fathers.
“Beg pardon,” Matt said.
Arthur sighed. “I said, I’m sorry. For how I have been treating you - how I did treat you. It wasn’t fair and nothing I say will make it right. But I need you to know, I regret it. I’m the one who has paid the price for underestimating you.”
Arthur loathed apologizing, but it seemed right. He couldn’t get any further into Matt’s heart if he didn’t address this huge road block; make the boy see he knew he’d done wrong.
He thought it would be painful, humiliating. It was of course, more than that though Arthur was surprised with how sincere this became. He had only meant it to appease Matthew, and now he realized he’d gladly do away with his pride just to see the boy smile.
He did, of course. Even when he was unhappy Matthew would smile - this one was secretive, private and Arthur longed to ask what he was thinking.
“Okay. Thanks, Arthur. I mean it - I . It means a lot coming from you,” Matt said. Here he picked and pulled at the scone without putting any to his lips.
“I know my people might not really warm up to you anytime soon, but I can still appreciate what you did, eh?” The blond smiled, teeth gleaming in the warm afternoon light. “If you or Francis hadn’t really found me, I would probably be raised by Ivan still.”
Damn that frozen-hearted Ruskie, couldn’t he leave Matthew and him in peace for five minutes? Arthur put his cup down with more force than necessary, and it badly started Matt.
“Sorry, but - you said still. You knew him before you knew France or I?”
The blond head bobbed nervously. “Y-yeah, Arthur, our lands used to be joined, remember? Look it doesn’t matter, eh? It’s in the past. And it never turned out that way; you guys found me, so it’s alright.” The heaviness of distress seemed to have been swept clean from Matt’s brow, and he was smiling again.
Arthur was helpless, his anger vanishing when the boy looked like that. He stood slowly, moving to sit down beside him. He tried to still the moth-like trembling of his hand, delicately touching the boy’s hair, soft and woven between his fingers. The tenderness of such a discovery opened another pleasure in him.
“Aha, I know it needs to be cut a little-”
“No!” he yelped. He cleared his throat and tried again, gentleness a foreign thing still. “N-no. It’s fine, it used to remind me of France but now I think it suits you.” The mouth worked, unsure of what shape to take. Finally it settled on a rather peaceful smile, completely at odds with the mischievous eyes. Slim knuckles brushed across his thigh while the sound of his own heartbeat reverberated in his ears.
“I kinda thought so too.” Matt whispered. ______________________________________________________________________ In which Arthur woo's Canada. So I have 2 votes for Eng/Can, and 1 for Rus/Can. THere still more to go, so I'll keep tally.
Nice, very nice. You're great at writing simple and natural wooing scenes. :o Although, IDK that Canadians have anything particular against the British, maybe I missed something, haha.
Should also note that I third the vote for England/Canada. \o/

I'm really enjoying this so far and can't wait to read more ^_^
And I 4th (unless someone comments before me in which case I 5th or whatever it should be) the vote for Eng/Can, if only because it's rare. (Or maybe Eng/Can/Rus? That's a pairing I've yet to see)

OH SWEET YES, GET MORE OF YOUR PEEPS TO VOTE!!!!!!
Not that uh, I have a vested interest in one pairing or another. Nope. Not at all. It's not that I don't like England/Canada....it's more like I'm not a fan of just england the character.
R-right now it's 2 rus/can against 4 eng/can.

You know, you don't have to go with who wins the vote considering you're the author and OP doesn't care who wins :P Go with who you want to win. Besides, knowing how much I tend to lurk, I'd be willing to be you've got quite a few Rus/Can lurkers who don't want to comment for one reason or another :)
For the record, I am a fan of Rus/Can and would be happy with that outcome. I only voted Eng/Can because of how rare it is. Go with what you want though ♥
