It was where to go from there that was the problem. Now they do not look at each other, aside from to deliver a zinger of a comment during a meeting. They do not speak much at all outside official business. The whole world remembers their hate, but it seems few people remember there was something to come before that.
But they do-it is something that is not spoken of, as most things are not between them. Even now, everything is a competition. Because they no longer know how to behave around each other anymore, do not know what to call each other.
Perhaps if it were explained, if they had ever bothered to discuss the reasons for the break in the first place, but no. They are both too stubborn, too proud to dare. Because speaking of it means speaking of feelings, of ways that they have hurt each other and that requires an admission of vulnerability, something neither of them is willing to give to each other.
So things remain as they are, with everything else unspoken and unacknowledged.
There was a time when Russia and America were the best of friends, but no one cares to remembers that time, least of all Ivan and Alfred. Because it would be so much easier to just hate each other and be done with it. But life seldom obliges people by being so simple.
