Gina now has a diamond ring on her finger. She’s obviously ecstatic about her upcoming wedding; her parents were even more excited that their daughter was finally with a man who made her happy after she broke up with that blonde haired boy from college. That, and they really wanted grandkids.

Gina’s wedding is only months away, but Alfred absolutely had to see her. They have a secret meeting in a place only they knew. He congratulated her and asked her if she was happy. When her only response was an indifferent shrug, he chastised her.

“Gina,” he said, trying to keep himself from touching her. “You know marriage is a big decision; you should be sure this is what you want. You have to be certain you want to spend the rest of your life with him!”

And then she gave him a piercing look that cut straight in to his heart and she curtly told him, “If I can’t be with who I want, then it doesn’t really matter who I settle for.”

Alfred couldn’t believe just how callous she was being. “For God’s sake, Gina, you know that this is not and was not meant to last! And Ian’s a great guy; I’m willing to admit that. And he made you smile - that genuine smile, not the one you put on when you try to keep up appearances!”

Gina realized quickly just how caustic she had been. Ian had been nothing but good to her, and it wasn’t fair that she was treating him like a secondary being and comparing him to Alfred in these regards. She broke down and began sobbing, and before she could stop herself, she threw her arms around Alfred’s body. He was wearing that same bomber jacket with the furry collar and the big 50 emblazoned on the back. She took a long sniff of the fabric, and let herself get lost in the memories. She felt so horrible, and continued to cry into Alfred’s jacket.

Alfred let himself get lost into her embrace. These tears were years in the making, and he felt just as horrible as she did. It wasn’t to say that he didn’t enjoy being the embodiment of this nation. He loved it in fact; he got to experience so many things that no normal person could ever hope to see. But if there was one thing he could trade his immortality, duties and experiences for, it would to be able to experience a normal life, and share it with someone he loved.

But he couldn’t. All he could do was try to comfort her, tell her she wasn’t a horrible person, that her love for him meant more to him than she would think, and that he would only be happy if she stayed strong for him.
