More time passed, and Gina had graduated from college at the age of twenty-two. Both she and Alfred knew that he could no longer pass as her same-aged boyfriend by that time, and it hurt her. She knew from the start that this was not truly meant to last, but that didn’t make the pain of separation any less horrible.

“So what you going to do now?” she asked. They were sitting under a tree in a park. The sky was clear and sunny and the green grass felt cool under their bodies as they leaned into each other’s arms.

Alfred shrugged, “I’m going back to Washington DC. I’ll be going back to the way things were more or less - have to help out my boss with stuff, you know?”

She nodded and clutched on to him tighter. Gina struggled to keep the tears from forming in her eyes. She wished Alfred could take her with him, but she knew he wouldn’t, not just because of their physical age differences, but also because of he would want her to find a life outside of him. But that was almost impossible - he was her country, and she couldn’t leave him. He was so many things to her, and no other man could compare, as unfair as that was.

So that night, before he left, Alfred gave her a parting gift. He held her close as his hips ground against hers, and when she gasped and closed her eyes, he made her hold his gaze the whole time. They both bitterly wept, both knowing this was goodbye. They were in too deep, it was never meant to last, and the only thing they could do was break this off before it broke them.

“Alfred, I want you to know this - you were my first love before I even met you. I sang your anthem, pledged my allegiance to you and continued to love you through everything. Nothing will ever take that away. I will always love you. My beautiful country, America…”

It was just her luck that love had to be even more painful than normal when she’s the one to feel it.

And it was just his luck that he was forever tied to a landmass called the United States of America, never allowed to pursue a normal life, to feel everlasting love.

In the years that followed, Alfred did his best to keep his distance from Gina. He occasionally checked up on her, spoke with her (on the phone and face-to-face) but they never got any further than that. It was playing with fire right there. They ran the risk of letting their feelings rule them, and destroy the progress they were making. The air would sizzle around them, whispering of illicit deeds and forbidden want, and he has to stomp out the crazy urge to take her right then and there while she has to hold herself back from abandoning everything close to her and just dedicate all of herself to him forever.

Because Alfred really wanted Gina to be able to move on without him. She did, in a way. She had a fairly successful career as a freelance journalist and photographer for the local magazines and news stations. Her romantic life was a different story. She had plenty of suitors; what beautiful, confident young woman didn’t?

But that desire to want to see her move on without him did not keep Alfred from feeling jealous at the fact that Gina had been dating all kinds of guys. He felt horrible over his feelings of envy, and even worse at the smug satisfaction that overtook him when she inevitably broke up with those suitors as quickly as she got together with them. And it wasn’t that the men she had gone out with weren’t handsome, kind or even rich in some cases. It was just unfortunate for them that they all shared one fatal flaw…

They just were not him.

As Gina’s parents began to nag her about settling down, she became a bit more serious and her slews of boyfriends stop. She’s now dating a man named Ian and this is a relationship that would last, Alfred was certain. Ian’s almost too good to be true. He was handsome, with black hair, hazel green eyes, an attractive face with strong features and a tall athletic body. He was sweet, nice, and considerate. And to top it all off, he was also a successful doctor. Their respective families approved of them dating, and Gina, for the first time in a long time, was genuinely happy with him. And seeing Gina smile again made Alfred happy, even if that smile was delivered to another man.

‘He had better appreciate her…’ Alfred thought. And if Ian ever did anything to hurt Gina, they would need DNA tests to identify the mangled corpse.
