Just so you know, Gina is based off of me, but she's not really me. Mmmkay?
*************************************

Later, Alfred pulled up at Gina’s home, where he was supposed to pick her up at six o’clock. The neighborhood was characterized as being one of the rich neighborhoods of Tucson, Arizona. He took in the sight - her home was a rather big place, rustic styled, with stairs leading up to the front door. There was an area of land that was filled with native Arizona plants, and when he decided to look over, he saw that the back yard had a swimming pool. He couldn’t believe it.

He had no idea where she chose for their date, but he knew that women loved nice things, so he put on a nice outfit - a dark blue button up shirt with tan slacks and a matching tan sport coat. To be on the safe side, he also carried a lot of money with him.

From the front door stepped out Gina, wearing a coral red cocktail dress. Her hair was down, descending in pretty waves, and she had a pair of brown high heels on. She really could look gorgeous when she put in the effort. She locked the door behind her and said, “You’re looking good, Alfred.”

“And you are a dish,” he commented. He wondered why she didn’t put the effort into looking good all the time, despite her insecurities…

“Yeah, whatever. Let’s go, I’m going to get hungry,” she said frankly as she took her seat next to him in his shiny silver Volvo. It was probably a new car, judging from the fact that it was impeccably spotlessly clean, and had a little bit of that “new car smell” left in it. He followed her instructions well, and they stopped in front of a large mall.

It was no ordinary mall though. The whole place was open air, and its stores sold only the highest quality brands from designer handbags to elaborate kitchen appliances that you wouldn’t find in a place like Bed Bath ‘n’ Beyond. Gina’s restaurant choice was somewhat simplistic - an American restaurant that specialized in seafood. It was a nice place, and since the weather was nice, they opted to sit outside in the courtyard. As soon as they were settled, the talking began.

“So tell me Alfred, what kind of family do you have?”

Alfred chuckled a bit and said, “I don’t really have parents. The closest thing I had to one was this guy I know named Arthur. He raised me since I was little and until I was old enough, I declared my independence, and began doing things for myself ever since then.”

“Good for you,” she nodded. “Well, I’ve had just about had a very normal, boring childhood. Other than the fact that my dad’s job in military engineering made us move a lot, I had a pretty well-adjusted life. It sort of makes me feel bad though, because I see all of these other people with dysfunctional families and whatnot, while mine was so supportive and loving that I’m sure people wonder if that’s just a front for some horrible things that are going on behind closed doors.”

Alfred was a bit taken aback by this. She seemed to have a slightly dark sense of humor, but at the same time, she really meant it. “So what are you getting at?”

“Nothing!” Gina quickly replied. “It’s just that I know this sort of thing exists, but it’s still so shocking to hear. Do you know what I’m saying?”

Alfred nodded, “That is true. Then again, I have seen plenty of screw-up shit in my life too.”

Gina wasn’t completely sure whether she wanted to press the issue, especially because the look on his face spoke volumes of discomfort. She decided not to and changed the subject.

“So what kinds of things have you been interested in?” she asked. She really wanted to get to know him.

Dinner was served, eaten and paid for. They got up and left the restaurant, and began to walk around the mall, while they continued to speak to each other for a long time, knowing one another, pouring their souls to each other. However, Gina couldn’t quite get rid of the feeling that Alfred was holding something back. And yet, he was so sincere that she couldn’t bring herself to push harder on the issue. Eventually, they took an otherwise uneventful car ride back to her home.

Once they were back, Gina said, “I really had a good time, Alfred. Thank you.”

Alfred smiled at her. She looked so happy. When he first saw her when she had been following him around, he noticed how she always looked bitter. She explained that it was because she had a pessimistic view of the world, but acknowledged the hope they still had. To see her look so happy and genuinely smile made him feel good.

“You’re welcome,” he replied. He then lifted her face up towards his, and continued, “You really look beautiful tonight. Especially your smile.” He then lowered himself slightly over to her while she stood on tiptoes, and their lips met. Whether it actually was there, or if it was her overactive imagination at work, Gina felt a spark between them as they kissed. Alfred tasted of many things - beef, beer, coffee, and so many “American” tastes that ran through her mind. That one kiss was enough to let each other know what they felt and thought. She felt a pang of sadness that it had to break off.

“So I guess I’ll be seeing you around then, huh?” she asked hopefully.

“Yeah, you’ll be seeing a lot more of me for sure!” Alfred boomed. Gina giggled a bit. She just loved that loud personality of his.

“Well, good night Alfred.” She then walked back into her house while he went back to his car. She watched him drive off and then collapsed against a chair. She felt so exhilarated. Her first true date…

But she still had a lot of suspicions about Alfred. The way he spoke and acted didn’t ring well with her. She wasn’t scared, but his attitude was not like anything she’d ever seen from someone her age. She needed to find out what the real deal with him was. But first she had some homework to do.

After changing into some comfortable sweat pants and t-shirt, she got on her computer right away, and began searching for information about important events in World War II.

What she found later would shock her.
